AllenLowe Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 actually, if we want to bring personalities into this, my least favorite drummer is Jack Dejohnette because he was very nasty to me once - Quote

AllenLowe Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 actually, I always confuse Dejohnette and Gould - Quote
BruceH Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I've actually found myself getting more into Buddy Rich in the last couple of years. Never thought I'd say that.... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I've actually found myself getting more into Buddy Rich in the last couple of years. Never thought I'd say that.... BR was a great drummer but questionable musician. Quote

BruceH Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Buddy Rich Denardo Coleman Ringo Starr That woman in the White Stripes Steve Reich (sorry, but "Drumming" is LAME) Somebody's always gotta kick Ringo. I think he was great. Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 my conclusion is that Buddy Rich was a great small band drummer when he was NOT the leader - saw a Playboy allstars clip once with 7-8 pieces, including Dizzy, with Rich on drums - sounded like Dave Tough - Quote
captainwrong Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 (edited) I've often found Joe Morello a bit stiff and cold. Some of the later stuff, like the Brubeck 25th anniversary album swings a little harder making me wonder what was up during the "classic" period. There...I said it. Jazzmoose Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Neil Peart Just checking to see how far into the thread it took to get to my least favorite; thanks Lon! Quote
Unbeknownst Recordings Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Who was that guy that played for Sky? Man, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Tristan Fry. I had to look that up. Also I heard Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island for the first time recently and noticed how ordinary the drumming is on that. The ride cymbal is very erratic and not in a good way. I'd only ever heard the remix version before then. Also, yes, Neil Peart. In my view the only guy who ever got away with that 'mega-kit' thing was Bill Bruford. www.unbeknownstrecordings.com Quote
tkeith Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Gadd came to mind, but then, I don't think of him as a "Jazz" drummer, and the list of non-Jazz drummers I detest would be too long. Buddy Rich would have to be on the short list, as would Alan Dawson. AD can actually ruin Booker Ervin for me at times. Quote

I like him more than I like Booker, to be honest. He was imaginative and interactive. Taught Tony Williams a lot. . . . Quote
