Soul Stream Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 I bought this the other day and can't get it off of my mind or my CD player. This is just some of the baddest of the bad. To think, I use to AVOID that CTI stuff...what a huge mistake that was. This is the REAL Night of the Cookers.... Quote
kh1958 Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 Keep Your Soul Together (Freddie with Junior Cook, George Cables, Ron Carter) is another one on CTI to keep an eye out for. Noj Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 I like a number of the CTI Freddie Hubbard albums--Red Clay, First Light, and Sky Dive...but Straight Life is probably the best one for strict jazz fans. There are definitely a lot of CTI albums jazz fans should avoid, but I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know, Soul Stream. Quote
DMP Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 Except for the packaging and personnel, "Straight Life" isn't your typical CTI album. But there's good stuff scattered all through the catalog. Quote
BFrank Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 Definitely a great CTI album. "Red Clay" should be in your collection, too. Quote

marcoliv Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 as a CTI enthousiastic, i easily recommend all those Hubbards mentioned Marcus Quote
Big Al Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Joe Henderson plays like a man possessed on this session. As does DeJohnette! And Hubbard! And..... Quote

Free For All Posted July 18, 2005 Report Posted July 18, 2005 I've always had a soft spot for the 1978 Columbia release Super Blue. An obvious attempt to recreate some of his CTI days that for the most part worked out pretty well IMHO. Not sure if it's in print though. My CD copy is an import that I purchased quite some time ago. pasta Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 $11.98 on amazon, domestic reissue from 1997 I believe, digipak. Quote

A couple of the tracks made it to CD on the cleverly titled "Jazz Moods - Hot" Hubbard compilation of last year. It is actually an excellent CD - includes a bunch of CTI tracks in addition to the Super Blue tracks. Quote
kh1958 Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 I don't have the CD of this one, just my LP, but it's on my wantlist. The first time I was able to see Freddie was after this came out, and he kept us waiting (for both sets) but the second set he played a great version of Shades of Trane from this LP (George Cables on electric piano, but alas no Junior Cook). Keep Your Soul Together (Freddie with Junior Cook, George Cables, Ron Carter) is another one on CTI to keep an eye out for.
