BFrank Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 This looks like it's well worth picking up! EXPERIENCE HENDRIX TO RELEASE JIMI HENDRIX: LIVE AT WOODSTOCK [THE DELUXE EDITION] ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2005 SOURCE: Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. DATE: July 14, 2005 SEATTLE, WA (July 14, 2005) - Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. in association with Universal Music Enterprises is pleased to announce the release of Jimi Hendrix: Live At Woodstock [The Deluxe Edition] on September 13, 2005. This special two-disc DVD presentation of Jimi Hendrix: Live At Woodstock stands as the definitive record of one of Jimi's most celebrated performances. This all-new deluxe set features all of the existing film footage from Jimi's unforgettable August 1969 Woodstock concert newly re-edited and presented uninterrupted and in its original performance sequence. Live At Woodstock includes never-before-seen versions of "Foxey Lady," "Message To Love," "Hey Joe," "Spanish Castle Magic," and "Lover Man," and an all-new 5.1 and 2.0 stereo soundtrack mixed by Eddie Kramer, Jimi's original studio engineer. Where 1994’s original VHS [and subsequent DVD] release of Hendrix’s Woodstock performance ran for only 57 minutes, Experience Hendrix has teamed with Warner Bros. to restore all of the existing film footage from Hendrix's legendary Woodstock performance. This new edition was entirely re-edited by Jere Huggins, one of the original editors of the 1970 Academy Award winning Woodstock documentary. Huggins worked extensively with Experience Hendrix's Janie Hendrix and John McDermott, as well as noted Warner Bros. film restoration specialist Bill Rush to incorporate a variety of previously unseen camera angles and coverage. Rush has been involved in the careful, critically acclaimed restoration of many classic films, including Public Enemy, Casablanca, and Out Of The Past. The result is a frame by frame digital restoration that presents Hendrix in vibrant color and detail. In addition to the full-length feature Live At Woodstock, this deluxe two DVD collection features a multitude of special bonus features including: THE ROAD TO WOODSTOCK A new documentary featuring Hendrix performance footage and new interviews with Woodstock promoter Michael Lang, and Hendrix band members Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, Larry Lee, and Juma Sultan among others. JIMI HENDRIX: LIVE AT WOODSTOCK: A SECOND LOOK In addition to the newly re-edited color footage featured on DVD one, A Second Look offers a totally unique perspective of Jimi's Woodstock performance that has never before been shared. A Second Look combines never before seen black and white video footage of Jimi’s legendary Woodstock performance intercut with alternate camera angles filmed in color. A Second Look features uninterrupted footage of every performance featured on DVD One in its original performance sequence. In addition, A Second Look presents never before seen video footage of “Hear My Train A Comin’”--a performance missed by the film crew and presented here for the very first time. JIMI HENDRIX PRESS CONFERENCE: Filmed at Frank’s Restaurant, Harlem on September 3, 1969 two weeks after Woodstock. At a press conference called to announce his upcoming benefit performance on behalf of the United Block Association, a Harlem based youth organiziation, Jimi spoke about the festival and his memorable rendition of “Star Spangled Banner”. NASHVILLE ROOTS Band members Billy Cox and Larry Lee recall their friendship with Jimi Hendrix and their shared journey from the fabled R&B 'chitlin circuit' to the greatest rock festival ever conceived. RECORDING WOODSTOCK: Engineer Eddie Kramer details the recording of the entire epic festival. RARE ARTIFACTS & MEMORABILIA: Collection includes original Woodstock poster, festival tickets, and Hendrix's own handwritten set list draft, and poem about the festival, "500,000 Halos." BFrank Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 Sure, Lon. I knew you would be interested. FWIW, Jimi's Woodstock appearance has never been one of my favorites, but being able to see a different edit job on the film may change my mind. The original film was so frustrating, with all the super-closeups and endless shots of the emptying fairgrounds, that it was hard to enjoy the performance. So now that they have gone back to the orignal film and re-edited everything it should give us a whole new take on it. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Right. It's never been a favorite on film either, but I've always dug the audio (including the unofficially released extra material) even though it really irks me that only the trio were properly recorded, and not the rest of the Gypsies. And I totally missed that "The Jimi Hendrix Story" was released last month in a two disc set that has lots of nice looking extras! I'm not that much of a dvd collector but I may have to replace my single disc version of that for the new one this year! Quote
Soul Stream Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 I'm looking forward to this. This is actually my favorite band that Jimi ever assembled. Quote
Noj Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 "Villanova Junction" is one of my favorite Hendrix songs ever. Gives me chills. This may be worth getting so I can watch it and not just listen to it. Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 "where 1994's original... ran for only 57 minutes..." ok got that part. how much of the original performance has been restored? I think I liked that later band best of all too. Quote

AmirBagachelles Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 My point is that they seem headed toward a quantification of new unreleased material with that phrase about the old one being only 57 minutes. So how much new will be available?. I am very wary of rereissues. Quote

The fact that they are totally re-editing would be enough for me at this point. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 (edited) Very interesting two cd release which is being sold right now by cduniverse for ELEVEN DOLLARS. They've included all the performances EXCEPT for the fascinating two selections fronted by Larry Lee, damn it. (Mastermind Man, Gypsy Woman). And of course there are only occasional sonic evidence of Larry, Juma and Jerry if you listen really really hard. It has always always really burned me up that they recorded this with an ear to ingnoring totally the expansion of the band. That said. . . .Man the picture is better on the original version, there's about 23 more minutes of stuff, the thing looks better because they remixed it with more camera angles, etc. AND the black and white film I find pretty fascinating in its way. Some reviews of this say that most will just watch the "Second Look" once; I'm going to watch that more than once. What is that woman holding throughout the performance? A cat? JohnT Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 Can't believe that cat doesn't even flitch during the performance!! Maybe it had a few too many whiffs of...well you know, it was the '60's!!! Quote
