mrjazzman Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 (edited) My favorite drummers are in order, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Philly Joe Jones, Billy Higgins and Art Taylor. Of course there are many others that I like a lot such as Jimmy Cobb, Charlie Persip, Louis Hayes, Alan Dawson. Of the young lions, my favorite is Louis Nash and I like Jeff "Tain" Watts a lot. What say you........... Edited July 15, 2005 by mrjazzman Quote

baryshnikov Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 I was lucky enough to meet Art Blakey and have a drink with him years ago at Ronnies Scotts, he was amazing, you only have to listen to Night in Tunisia to realise that. But i saw the Guvnor three times and it was a brilliant adrealin rush, and i met him afterwards, theres only one genius and thats M r Rich, no contest, paul london. Quote

mikeweil Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Don't ask me about drummers, regardless of style ... there are dozens, all of them are great and have their own style. It would be injustice to name one before the other. Quote
Brad Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 On the tubs, I like Art Blakey, Philly Joe and Art Taylor. Those would be my favorites. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 There are many many drummers I like. here are some of my favorites tht quicky come to mind. Guy Berger Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 5 drummers who I really like: Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Elvin Jones, Paul Motian, Ed Blackwell Quote
Kalo Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 Kenny Clarke if I had to choose just one. Quote
cannonball-addict Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 Art Blakey and Max Roach had it all. Ed Blackwell had a special thing. So did Tony Williams - a real special thing. Since Tony Williams, nobody does it for me except Lewis Nash, Brian Blade, Bill Stewart, and Matt Wilson. Nate Smith is pretty nice too. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 (edited) Art Blakey, Philly Joe, Tony, Elvin, Jimmy Cobb, Donald Bailey, Steve Gadd. As for cats more active on today's scene, Jack DeJohnette, Teri Lyne Carrington, Brian Blade, Tain, Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez and Antonio Sanchez, Bill Stewart are some of my favorites. Sanchez is a major young talent on the skins. He has chops and the musicality to back it up. Edited July 16, 2005 by CJ Shearn Quote
marcoliv Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Blakey, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Louis Hayes, Art Taylor and many others... Marcus Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 All of 'em. Art Taylor, Frank Butler, Roy Haynes, JC Moses, Philly Joe... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Not Herbie? Or did the Push Push thread ruin that for all eternity? Quote
CJ Shearn Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Clifford, Frank Butler, really? I have only heard his work on "Seven Steps to Heaven" and I find it pleasing but not particularly stunning, sounds like hes trying too hard to fill the hole left by Jimmy Cobb at times. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 if i see tony williams, ed blackwell, tootie heath, roy haynes, philly jones, eric gravatt, billy hart or elvin jones is playing on an album-that is enough reason for me to at least hear the album. max roach, lous hayes, jack dejohnette (sometimes) and billy higgins (sometimes) do not always connect with me the way i would like...art taylor is good though i do not find him individual enough to be a "must hear" player though i have the highest respect for him. since it seems like people are listing drummers outisde of bob/hard bop let me add jon christensen, who is a great drummer and makes many ECM dates for me. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Teri Lyne Carrington is amazing. I don't know why she doesn't get more props. Brian Blade is pretty jaw-dropping as well. That's for the new school. For the old school, gotta give it up to Ben Dixon, Joe Dukes, and Donald Bailey... organ drummers extraordinaire! Quote
