Bright Moments Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 i have the opportunity to purchase this box set for $85.00 US and am seriously considering it (after all EVERYBODY digs Bill Evans!). before i pull the trigger i thought i'd ask my big "O" pals who have heard the box whether this set will give me hours and hours of pleasure or if the sound quality is just too raw. as always thanks in advance to all for comments received. md655321 Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Some very nice stuff for the most part. I was actually quite pleased with the sound quality overall, but it definitely isnt great quality. You can download it from www.emusic.com for cheaper. Or at least try it out. They have a free trial. But a worthy purchase certainly. Quote
Conclave Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 I've heard parts of this CD set and think it's like a 7 for audio quality and creative groove. I have the complete Riverside 12 disc set which is basically just all of Bill's Riverside recordings lumped together. It has its moments and historical value, but it's not a must have, unless your a die hard fan. I also have the 1980 6 disc set live at the Village Vanguard, Turn out the Stars, which is fantastic -audio and creative wise- just about a 10. Bill was ill when this was recorded, but you couldn't tell by his playing. His ideas are so fluid and complex with great trio interchange, that it will knock you out. This I highly recommend,if you dig Bill...................... Your money will be well spent. Quote
Bright Moments Posted July 31, 2005 Author Report Posted July 31, 2005 it was still there calling to me when i stopped by my favorite brick & mortar record store. now only $82.00. and i had a 10% discount coupon for any store purchase............ but i just bought those mosaics (3??!!!)........ what to do, what to do? can i resist? uh oh! i did it. connoisseur series500 Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 I had the chance to get the box set for $80, but I passed it up. I bought "Turn Out the Stars" box set instead, because the audio quality was so much better. I did place a sample disc on the store cd player to compare the two. I bet the boxset is still there in Ann Arbor. I felt the sound quality of the Secret Sessions is too poor to justify the purchase. But I'm fussy about good mastering. I bet the music is good... Quote

Jerry Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 (edited) The quality gets quite a bit better after the 1st couple of sets. If I remember right the fan got a different recorder and mike. That said, I would get this box after getting all the others, because of the limitations of the recording technique (a tape recorder in a briefcase under the table or some such). jazzbo Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 Glad you got it Evan. I got this from eMusic and I think the music is fantastic, and the sound gets the job done. Quote
Bill B Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 Some terrific music on the set; don't let 'sound quality' deter you! actually the sound got better and better. Fantasy was to release a "Best of the Secret Sessions" Disk, but Concord took over and that died. Nothing has been heard of the rest of the unissued Harris material ? Quote

One of my all-time favorite boxes and a nice booklet. Think I will listen to it tonight Quote
