Very good!

Don't get excited by the line-up on the first track, as Sims and Mulligan are barely audible, just filling in chords in the background. This is pretty much just Monk and Miles all the way- indeed, the very solo that got Miles noticed at Newport that year and led to the Columbia contract. History in the making. A pity that the whole set wasn't included as it only totalled about 23 minutes and could easily have fitted onto the disc complete. (There are boots of this set around but the one track here is in very much better sound)

The Philadelphia gig is a good one; any recording with this group is of interest in my book. 'Johnny' Coltrane [sic] is in fine form and the recording ain't bad, certainly better than the bootlegged airshots one has to go to for live performances by this line up.

Is it worth the money? Depends. How much of a Miles nut are you?

The set is definitely worth the money, regardless of how many times one has purchased the original album. The second disc, principally the newly discovered concert from 1956 with the great group of Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe, is well recorded and it is a thrill to hear a concert performance by this group.

It is a shame that the only way to get the Pasadena (not Philadelphia) concert so far is as a major part of the second disc here. . . . But it's a fantastic show well worth hearing.

Okay... I'll admit to being slow. I don't open every thread here, but still, I'm kind of surprised. How new is this news? I just tried peeking at the Jazzmatazz site, and didn't see any mention of this in the "upcoming" listings (which go back awhile). ??? Is there another thread here where it's been discussed (details given)? I guess I tend to gloss over some of the Miles discussions, because I tend not to do audio upgrades, and I have pretty much what I want by Miles...

The set was released three weeks or so ago. I do recall reading about it here at least a little while in advance.

I'm going to resist this as long as I can.

The unreleased material should have been released as a separate issue at a reasonable price.

I'd pay $15 for this but not $30. :(

I'm sure within a few months Yourmusic.com will have this for 11.98. Don't be angry, be patient... :)

I think it was discussed here first in a Monk/Trane thread:

New Monk-Coltrane Performance Discovered, At Carnegie Hall - WTF??????

I bought it a few weeks ago - curiosity got the better of me, and/or I'm a sucker with too much money to waste!

Really, the primary reason to get this one must be the very much improved sound on the original record. It is really a very good remastering job, exceptional really, and it really puts you back into that era with the feeling and vibe of the day. The disc 1 bonus track from the same sessions are worthwhile but not really adding anything new, the booklet is very well done.

Disc 2 - the rendition of the title track, which I recognize to be of great historical value, is out of place with the rest of the package - tone, sonics, personnel, vibe. The live set is for the most part very good, but again nothing revelatory, and far too brief to make it worth reacquiring this title for on it's own.

All in all, if an exceptional remaster of the original is what people are looking for this one is the one to get and the additions make it even more attractive, but acquiring the set just for the second disc isn't going to give great value.

What was the most recent version you had before picking this up? I have the 2001 Columbia/Legacy 24-bit version (and the Miles/Trane Columbia box set), and I'm finding it hard to believe that this version could sound any better. As I said, I generally don't buy things for sonic upgrades... I'm just surprised/curious because nobody else mentioned your point (unless I overlooked it). To me, the main appeal is getting the "new" material...

Of course, the first disc also has four outstanding tracks that were not on the original album-Sweet Sue, Just You, Budo and Little Melonae being favorites of mine, but I thought they were on the last single disc reissue of this material also.

The concert on the second disc, by the way, is about 30 minutes long, a pretty significant discovery in my view.

I believe this is the same mastering as the '01 reissue, it sounds the same from what I remember before I gave the single disc to a friend. As far as disc 1, it says the mastering is 24 bit super bit mapped (just an indicator this one sounds good to me, I'm not an audiophile equipment wise) by Mark Wilder, Sony studios, NY

According to the sticker on the Miles/Trane box, that one is "remastered in 20bit by Mark Wilder". It could be that Sony has archived the tapes in DSD (transfer of the analog tapes done by Mark Wilder) and made a new DSD-to-PCM (24bit) transfer for the single CD release.

I don't think this would make a sonic difference, as the 20bit or 24bit signal needs to be downsampled to 16bit for the CD. Only a new transfer of the analog tapes to digital could sound significantly different, as it requires choices to be made by the engineer.

My favourite version is the SACD, which avoids any PCM transfer.

I would have bought the concert CD if it was available seperately. A list price of $30, what are they thinking? "Deluxe" 2CD reissues are OK (priced $20) when the added material is closely related to the main recordings, like on the "A love supreme" 2CD reissue, but this Miles concert should have been released seperately, or in a bigger box set with more previously unreleased live recordings.
