I really like both of Konitz and Solal, and "Star Eyes, Hamburg 1983" (Hatology) is one of my favorite recordings. So, I am wondering about the following 1968 recordings on Cam:

"European Episode"

"Impressive Rome"

Any comments about the music and the sound on these recordings? Many thanks in advance.

I've one of the discs you mention, playing is well up to standard , the sound however is a little harsh and echoey and doesn't make for the easiest of listens.

Not my favorite Konitz-Solal from what I remember but I have not played this for quite a while. Don' remember this as being up to the 'Star Eyes' level!

I like 'Jazz a Juan' (SteepleChase) and 'Satori' (Milestone) much better than the Cam discs.

Also the 'Duplicity' twofer on Horo. But this one should be hard to get by now!

Informatively Martial Solal was in a Paris recording studio this week, making a new album for CamJazz. A duo date with Dave Douglas!

Sounds very interesting brownie. Any information about the release date or what label???

Thanks very much for very helpful comments.  I guess I will start with Konitz's recordings with Alan Broadbent first.

Hm...... I really don't like those records (Live-Lee & More Live-Lee) very much. A better Lee + piano date is Wild as Springtime on Candid with Harold Danko, or the duo tracks with Mosca on Spirits. Larry Kart also tells me that a Lee/Renato Sellani duo on Philology is worth checking out, but I haven't heard it.

I really like Star Eyes.

I've steered away from the Broadbents, as I find his playing to be a bit boring at times. I might get them if I find them cheap, though.

Yet another Konitz piano duo recommendation: Solitudes with Enrico Pieranunzi (Philology).

Also the 'Duplicity' twofer on Horo. But this one should be hard to get by now!

I have the Solal/Konitz Duplicity and it's quite interesting, almost in more of a Tristano mode, with elaborations of standards that are retitled and almost unrecognizable.

Two more recommended, which I have on PAUSA LPs: Duo: Lee Konitz & Martial Solal -- Live at the Berlin Jazz Days 1980. Then there's a drummerless quartet Four Keys, with Konitz, Solal, NHOP, and John Scofield(!). This might be my favorite recording featuring Solal and Konitz together. It's cool in both senses of the word and contains some free improv as well. I don't really care for Scofield elsewhere, but he's quite good here, almost like Grant Green in a freer mode.

Unfortunately, my turntable's on the fritz, so I haven't listened to any of these in a while.

I'll have to keep an eye out for those.

The Candid is a reissue of an lp I've liked for a long time - the original was on GFM records from Scotland.

Has anyone mentioned (too lazy to backtrack) the recordings under the original discussion include Henry Textier and Daniel Humair? I have loved these recordings since they were originally issued and still like 'em.

Some time last year, after listening to "NY1", I contacted Blue Note to encourage them to record more Solal. They wrote back to tell me that they are planning a studio recording for Fall 2005. I hope that plan is still on.

Any idea whether this has made it to CD? I'd be curious to hear this. It's listed as a Solal date on AMG. Sco also played on Lee Konitz' "Rhapsody II", but I'm not sure what else they've been on together. And my enthusiasm for "all things Scofield" has slowed down quite a bit, but I still really enjoy alot of his earlier BN and pre-BN work. This is the type of thing I'm looking for from him these days.

Four Keys was originally recorded for the MPS label. Perhaps our European friends have an idea if this has been reissued or is going to be.

As far as I know, Four Keys is available on vinyl only.

A very enjoyable and lyrical session with seven originals, all by Solal!

Agree with the two previous assessments of Scofield. Don't care very much for his playing usually, but he was inspired on that date!

It is indeed one of the best collaboration of Solal and Konitz and should be reissued on CD now that MPS albums are back in the limelight.

I've been hoping for an MPS reissue of ZO-KO-MA.

I Googled that and it sounds intriguing: Attilla Zoller, Lee Konitz, and Albert Mangelsdorff.

Sign me up for that.

I'm also fond of Thingin on Hatology with Attila Zoller & Don Friedman. It's a bit unusual because mostly it's challenging originals rather than Konitz's usual bag of standards plus the mandatory "317 E 32nd" & "Subconscious-Lee". It has the first (I think) appearance of Lee's "Thingin", which is an "All the Things You Are" tune with the 2nd half played in the "wrong" key.

(Re)listened to Lee and Hal Galper: 'Windows' on Steeplechase today - very fine Lee. Galper's playing is a little too romantic for my taste - he's drunk too long at the well of Bill Evans - especially on the ballads. He's ok on the medium tempo tunes. I don't think that I could take an album of just him. But here his romanticism is a good contrast to Lee's playing and the album is a very good one.

European Episode & Impressive Rome (Konitz/Solal - see original post) have been reissued together on CamJazz. Contrary to the prevalent opinion on this thread, I think it's a great release and well worth hearing for all Konitz fans.

I tend to agree :tup .
