brownie Posted July 7, 2005 Report Posted July 7, 2005 The singer on the cover of the Nigel-Hayer release looked like Monica Vitti in a not too good day and it took me a few seconds to reconnect with the name. Those who have read James Gavin's biography of Chet Baker 'Deep In a Dream' will probably be familiar with her relation to the trumpet player. Ruth Young The just released 2002 session with alto saxophonist Herb Geller (and pianist Walter Lang, vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmid and bass player Rocky Knauer) is a pretty good try. No need to look far for the name of the singer who influenced her! James Gavin wrote the liner notes. There was a version of 'My Funny Valentine' which was supposed to be included in the album but was left out of the final release. Ruth Young decided against its use 'for several reasons'! Quote
king ubu Posted July 7, 2005 Report Posted July 7, 2005 ...only that la Vitti looked 100 times better (to say the very least...) than this lady, even on her worst day... ubu Quote
Daniel Andresen Posted July 7, 2005 Report Posted July 7, 2005 Ruth Sang with Chet on Autumn Leaves from "The Incredible Chet Baker Plays and Sings (1977). This gem in unfortunally VERY hard to find... Quote
brownie Posted July 7, 2005 Author Report Posted July 7, 2005 The Incredible Chet Baker album was reissued on CD on the Canadian label Carosello. Pretty hard to find, too! Quote
Daniel Andresen Posted July 8, 2005 Report Posted July 8, 2005 It surfaced in Israel under ANS records for a short period... Quote

Now about this Nagel-Heyer release, is it good? I saw it in a store this week but had not time to get an earful! Quote
brownie Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 Now about this Nagel-Heyer release, is it good? I saw it in a store this week but had not time to get an earful! Not too bad but really nothing exceptional about it. Mainly for diehard Chet Baker nostalgia fans. It's a similar inner (and slow) mood that pervades too many Chet Baker releases but without the man's obvious talent! And Herb Geller is not heard enough! Ubu, you're Swiss and went at Ms. Young's looks in a very unbecoming way I'm French and stuck to (almost) gallant neutrality Should have avoided a comparison with La Vitti which I had not meant to be turned out into a red flag at the young bull inside you! But there really was something to it... Quote
king ubu Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 (edited) But there really was something to it... ← you see? advanced age does not keep from learning! Seriously: Vitti, in those Antonioni films, is just the actress for poor king ubu! Edited July 15, 2005 by king ubu Quote
king ubu Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 But there really was something to it... ← you see? advanced age does not keep from learning! ← Or wait, did I get that the wrong way 'round? Now the poor king is confused. Whatever... here's Helmut Newton's take: Quote
brownie Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 Helmut Newton, great photographer as he was, would not render justice to la Vitti's beauty! Not a very good portrait! He would probably have found Ruth Young more in line with his type of models! Quote
