tranemonk Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 okay... so I'm looking at the Mosaic site and one of the reasons I had ruled out getting this set was I have several Mobley Blue Note Cd's.... the title of the box says the "Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions" and the discographical info on their site says the following: "Album index: BLP 5066 The Hank Mobley Quartet (J)CJ28-5128 CD reissue of above BLP 1540 Hank Mobley Sextet BLP 1544 Hank Mobley And His All-Stars BLP 1550 Hank Mobley Quintet B2-46816 CD reissue of above BLP 1560 Hank BLP 1568 Hank Mobley (J) BN 61006 Curtain Call (J) GXF 3066 Poppin' BLP 1574 Peckin' Time B2-81574 CD stereo reissue of above" I have "Peckin' Time and ... His All-Stars' on CD... Is this set worth the other 7 sessions??? I assume there's no new material... just the 9 alternate takes the website mentions? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Yes. These earliest sessions are amazing. Quote
tranemonk Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 I sense I will be taking your advice jazzbo.... Yes. These earliest sessions are amazing. ← Quote
Jim R Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Is this set worth the other 7 sessions??? ← Wow, I'm surprised you haven't been mobbed here. YES. Not only is it worth getting the other sessions you don't have, but it's a fantastic value. Some of the other titles being Japan-only on CD, it could get very expen$ive to get them later if you decided against the Mosaic. I had already bought them all (except for "Quartet"/5066, which was a bitch to find on CD in the days before mini-LP's), and I still couldn't resist buying the Mosaic. Quote
Ron S Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I love the Mobley set. Grab it! ← I second the motion (or third, or fourth, or whatever . . . .). Quote
sidewinder Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I know its become an oxymoron but I still can't believe it's still in print ! Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I'm not a fan of Ron McMaster's remastering, but the sound of this set is decent. This Mosaic is a wonderful document. Quote
Ron S Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I know its become an oxymoron but I still can't believe it's still in print ! ← And then there's that Johnson set. Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I know its become an oxymoron but I still can't believe it's still in print ! ← And then there's that Johnson set. ← ...Which is absolutely wonderful and a must in my opinion. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 yes, yes and those sessions with Silver on the bench are the cornerstones of "funk" - which, btw, I tried to explain to my kids just yesterday that jazz gave birth to funk and that the Black Eyed Peas are not worthy successors by any means! tranemonk Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 you all are making me feel better... I had my order in already for the Mulligan + the Brookmeyer Select... and then decided to give another listen to the Cd's I had and decided that the Mulligan was going to be around a lot longer than the Mobley. So I called Mosaic and changed the order.... so I'm due to get both the Mobley and the Brookmeyer select.... :phew: I hope I don't regret this..... Quote
jazzbo Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I would be very very very very very surprised if you even entertain a second thought after hearing the first few discs. . . . Quote
Jim R Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I hope I don't regret this..... ← It's a win / win situation. Even if you end up not liking the Mobley set, you can eventually sell it for a profit. Quote
Ron S Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I would be very very very very very surprised if you even entertain a second thought after hearing the first few discs. . . . ← That's only 5 "very's." Is that enough? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Yes, it's a carefully studied and structured response; not too many, but enough. Quote
JSngry Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 As the Prophets T-birds so aptly put it, one's too many and a hundred ain't enough... Quote
David Ayers Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 I would be very very very very very surprised if you even entertain a second thought after hearing the first few discs. . . . ← After hearing the first disc, I'd say! Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 You'll have fun flipping through the booklet as well, wondering why Blumenthal speculates that the control room crew was egging Mobley & Co. on to stretch out a bit longer on "Dance of the Infidels" in order to fill out an LP? Quote
