I purchased this self released CD from Mr. Spaulding in early June and have been meaning to mention it here ever since. The performances on this live recording come from the same gig as those on Spaulding's previously released Blues Up And Over Vol. 1. Its a quintet date with Dan Faulk (ts, ss), Isaac ben Ayala (p), Eric Lemon (b) and Reggie Nicholson (d). Very solid straight ahead live date that at times is reminiscent of classic Blue Note hard bop, but updated to reflect today. As usual Spaulding is featured on alto sax and flute and he blows with passion and imagination on both. Faulk caught my attention throughout with some very strong solos. Easily recommended to fans of Spaulding and straight ahead jazz in general.

Yeah, I think that's a great disc, and Faulk is very strong. It eclipses the first volume too, IMO. I was lucky enough to talk to James and write the liners for the session, and he's a wonderful and interesting character.

So yes, please spread the word on Spaulding's recordings!

I believe that you can order it directly from James at www.speetones.com , which is a pretty worthwhile visit in its own right.

I purchased mine directly from Mr. Spaulding via email.

Hey Ronald... Hope you are enjoying vol. 2, Round To It. James did not make a couple of the Gigs where his name is posted. For example, the gig with Tolliver's Big Band at Dizzy's Coca Cola and the gig at Yoshi's. But this is to set the record straignt, that he is feeling good, and just returned from Moscow, Russia, on August 22, '05, where he had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the musicianship. One of the things that gets in the way when playing with musician's here, is the ego trips. Round To It had a good review at: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/review_print.php?id=18279. James says, "Sorry to disappoint all of the fans but I hope to make it up at a later date."

I was at the Up/Over Jazz Cafe for one of the nights James recorded enough music for two self-released CDs, "Blues Up And Over Vol. 1" & "Round To It Vol. 2". I was pretty excited to hear these CDs, as I remember that night being pretty fantastic. I bought "Blues Up And Over" right away, but to this day, I have never found a CD copy of "Round To It" and missed this thread back in 2005. I see that James is now offering a download of "Round To It". It's a bit steep (as downloads go) at $18, but I may have to bite the bullet to finally re-hear this music.

glad you got to see those concerts! I still have fond memories of listening to the music and writing the notes. The CDs are boxed up in storage (one of these days I'll finish unpacking it all). $18 does seem high for a download, but if you buy it on a BC Friday (first Friday of every month), all of the money will go to James.
