clifford_thornton Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 I dunno, I'll be keeping mine but am eager to hear "Mephistopheles" again. I had a cassette of the tune at one point, and it's a monster - much freer than the version on Wayne's date. Quote
Clunky Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Perhaps shamefully I've no Marion Brown, is this a good place to start ? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 YES. This and "Three for Shepp" on Impulse. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 An interesting sidenote: Marion has said that this was recorded before Ascension, making it a Summer (rather than mid-November) 1965 date. Curious... Mike? Quote
Rosco Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 An interesting sidenote: Marion has said that this was recorded before Ascension, making it a Summer (rather than mid-November) 1965 date. Curious... Mike? ← That would also place it before Wayne's 'All Seeing Eye' session (October 15th)... Quote
brownie Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Clifford, I met Marion Brown in the fall of 1965 and he had not recorded a session under his name yet. For personal reasons, I can say that the November 1965 recording date is a no contest affirmation! Quote
Rosco Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 Perhaps shamefully I've no Marion Brown, is this a good place to start ? ← 'Why Not?' (ESP1040) is another good one. Brown, Stanley Cowell, Sirone and Rashied Ali are the quartet. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Perhaps *released* before Ascension? I'd have to look into it. Maybe ESP had a quicker turnaround time than Impulse? Mike Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Huh. I'm going from the horse's mouth, but memory can get foggy I suppose. He was quite adamant about it being after Fire Music and before Ascension... Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I guess we can hope to learn when the *other* session for ESP 1022 occurred. When did you get this from Brown? In my experience, some people are good with dates and sequence and some people are way off. Just saw an interview with Wayne Shorter where he was placing Africaine (with Blakey) as around 1962 - it's from 1959. Mike Quote
bertrand Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Mike, Is this interview online? Bertrand. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I happened to be reading the old issue of Jazz Forum, but actually, the interview is online. http://hepcat1950.com/footprin.html [Of course, Ju-Ju is 1964.....] I think I referenced this in the Shorter biography thread. Mike Quote
alankin Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Did anyone mention that ESP-Disk is reissuing this title on August 2nd? Quote
Rosco Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 Did anyone mention that ESP-Disk is reissuing this title on August 2nd? ← Ah ha! No track listing for it so far, though, so no telling if it will be 3 or 4 tracks... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 When did you get this from Brown? In my experience, some people are good with dates and sequence and some people are way off. ← About a month or so ago... who knows. Quote
king ubu Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Did anyone mention that ESP-Disk is reissuing this title on August 2nd? ← Ah ha! No track listing for it so far, though, so no telling if it will be 3 or 4 tracks... ← Tracklist is up now... 4 tracks! Of course I just bought a 3 track version of it... (I still don't understand the ESP CD reissue situation... Calibre, Abraxas, Get/Abraxas Mini-LPs... I guess those are all European-produced and licensed? And ESP is doing its own series in the US? And wasn't there talk about their own reissues being CDRs?) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 They have CDRs of some titles for now, until they remaster the catalog completely... though I doubt that some lesser titles will (or need to be) reissued, especially from the 'pop' catalogue. As I see it, the Euro versions are copies whose licenses have run out, though most distributors still stock them. Domestic ESPs are currently the only authorised versions in print. If you get the 4-track version that is out, you will not only get a nicely-done master of all known original takes, but liner notes by yours truly from an interview that I did with Marion this past Spring. And to this day, he still counters that he made the ESP first... Quote

Thanks to you and to Brownie for relating all the memories to the young ones like me! Quote
