bertrand Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 (edited) For those of you with the Herbie Hancock Sony box (or at least the booklet): Which version of 'Eye Of The Hurricane' is on this? Is is the one from 6/29/76 at Newport which was originally on the 2-LP V.S.O.P. album? If not, who is on it? Same question for 'Introduction To Maiden Voyage' and 'Maiden Voyage'. Thanks, Bertrand. Rosco Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 (edited) Yep, they're the same versions as on VSOP Edited July 1, 2005 by Rosco Quote
bertrand Posted July 1, 2005 Author Report Posted July 1, 2005 Rosco, Thanks! So, if I have it right, the box contains both 'Maiden Voyage' and 'Eye Of The Hurricane' from the V.S.O.P. album (6/29/76). Was the introduction on the LP as well, or is that a new track? I vaguely remembered that when the box came out, there was some previously unissued stuff, and I thought 'Hurricane' was one of them. Guess I was wrong. So, here's what I'm getting at: If I buy these tracks from the box on iTunes, plust 'Nefertiti' which is on a best of CD also available on iTunes, I can actually put together the entire V.S.O.P. quintet portion of the 2-LP set. This has never been out on CD. Thanks again, Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 The LP definitely had an introduction to "Maiden Voyage", so I would suspect that it's the same one. Quote
Rosco Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 Yep, disc 1 of the original VSOP LP is: Piano introduction/ Maiden Voyage/ Nefertiti/ Eye of the Hurricane so that would be the whole quintet set. The only unissued thing in the boxed set is a version of 'Red Clay' with the VSOP quintet recorded July 18, 1977 in San Diego. Quote
bertrand Posted July 1, 2005 Author Report Posted July 1, 2005 Great! I'll buy the 'Red Clay' too. At first, I was suspicious of this whole iTunes thing, but I gotta say, it's a cheap way of getting the oddball missing track. In this case, of getting an entire album not available on CD. I'll burn a copy of the whole thing, of course, and it's all very legal. To quote Anais Nin in the movie Henry and June (after she just finished fucking a guy other than her husband), 'I feel so pure'. Thanks guys, Bertrand. Quote

bertrand Posted July 1, 2005 Author Report Posted July 1, 2005 Looking at the contents, there are a lot of tunes I don't know. Apart from 'Maiden Voyage', 'Eye Of The Hurricane', 'Red Clay', 'Diana' and 'Finger Painting', are there any tracks with Wayne Shorter? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote

Thanks, Bertrand. ← Jeez, Bertrand... do you have any idea how difficult it is to open this Hancock box??! There's a few more tracks with Wayne: Para Oriente Domo medley: Stella by Starlight/ On Green Dolphin Street (all from Live Under the Sky) Eighty-One (from Tempest in the Colosseum) Live Under the Sky was reissued recently as a 2cd set and is well worth picking up if you haven't already. Not sure about Tempest. If you have those, you're really not missing much in the box. Apart from trying to open the damn thing! Quote
Eric Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 (edited) sweet idea for the 1976/77 VSOP stuff from iTunes - just assembled it myself for a cool $4.95 Edited July 1, 2005 by Eric Quote
king ubu Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 You are not talking about this album here? Because over here, this is readily available in a 2CD digipack... (sorry, don't have it handy and couldn't find a decent online Herbie discography to check, myself!) Quote
bertrand Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 That's the guy - not available in the U.S. Bertrand. Quote

bertrand Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 Dang - I could have had my mother pick it up in Paris. Is Jazz at the Opera House also available? That I would snap up in a minute - Shorter/Hutcherson collaborations are too rare. Bertrand. Quote

bertrand Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 I had no idea this had been available in France at some point. I always comb the record stores when I'm there (once a year), but never came across this one. Bertrand. Quote
