I haven't seen much talk about comping around here. So I was wondering, who is your favorite musician as far as "comping" goes? Limit this to pianists and guitarists.

My favorite is......

HERBIE HANCOCK

Especially his work on:

-Empyerean Isles

-Maiden Voyage

-Directions in Music

Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner are my favorites, although I only recently realized how brilliant Hank Jones is as well. His comping on the new Joe Lovano CD really caught my ear, and after going back and re-listening to all the Hank Jones in my collection, its clear that he's one of the best.

Yeah McCoy's a beast at comping. Look at who he got to comp for too.... lucky motherfu$%er.

Uh yeah anyways, I must give props to Chick Corea. His comping on the Akoustic Band CD with Patitucci and Weckl is amazing (yes, obviously when John solos).

Agree about Herbie -- almost perfectly responsive to the soloists, and he got even better after Maiden Voyage. Chick Corea and McCoy aren't quite on that Olympian level, but they're stupendous.

Herbie is a great comper.

John Lewis too, and playing counterpoint at the same time.

Hank Jones, impeccable accompanist extraordinaire.

Currently I enjoy Joao Donato's organ comping behind Cal Tjader on "The Prophet", a 1968 Verve LP.
