neveronfriday Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 compaired definately his | mine | your's to (instead of too) ... right, err, A.? perfactly seperate paralell ... The list is endless. I only picked recurring errors in posts submitted by native speakers (to stem the "we type faster than we think" reprimands). Am I right in assuming that English is going down the shute as fast as my own mother tongue, which, as far as I can tell, is spoken correctly by about 10% of the population? Could it be that "old Europe" is having an adverse effect on the U.S.? Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 my pet peeve is "where's your mother's tongue at". drives me nuts cause my mother would spritely crack her own with a quick "behind the at". Quote

neveronfriday Posted June 28, 2005 Author Report Posted June 28, 2005 Here in Germany, the list is endless as well. I don't think there's a point in posting a list here though. Quote

neveronfriday Posted June 28, 2005 Author Report Posted June 28, 2005 @ J.A.W. "[...] der, wo [...]" "[...] die, wo [...]" "Wasn das" instead of "Was ist denn das" [many people think that "Wasn" is actually the way it is said). "anschliesen" instead of "anschliessen"/anschließen" (I hope the 'sharp' "s" shows up here) "das" instead of "dass" "nich" instead of "nicht" "wechsle" instead of "wechsele" etc., etc., etc. ... The additional problem here is that we have a trillion dialects which seem to force people to write the way they speak. Want more examples? Quote

bluesForBartok Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 how about when people say/write "I could care less" when what they should be saying is "I couldn't care less" I hear that mistake more often than any other. Quote

Is it "Was hast Du denn da"? ← Ding, ding, ding. That's 1 Euro 50 for you. You are welcome to collect at my place. I'll add a couple of generous shots of Tequila, or any other poison you subscribe to. Or you can double and figure this one out: "A Rat bat si." ("Fränkisch") Quote
MartyJazz Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 Check out the book "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" for a funny treatment of the common English mistakes everyone encounters. The author really takes off on the "its" vs "it's" confusion. Incidentally my pet peeve is when people confuse "your" and "you're". It's kind of ironically hysterical when you encounter it on a handwritten sign: "Your a moron". Quote

But even my dad didn't know that one, and he grew up their, err, there. Quote
J.A.W. Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 I'd never have guessed that... I was thinking of a corruption of "Rabatt", but the bathing rat now seems very logical Quote
neveronfriday Posted June 28, 2005 Author Report Posted June 28, 2005 Don't use the word logical in this thread. We're talkin' "Dorftrottel" here. Quote
neveronfriday Posted June 28, 2005 Author Report Posted June 28, 2005 BTW: The Tequila is still available ... The Euro 1,50 are gone though. Quote

neveronfriday Posted June 28, 2005 Author Report Posted June 28, 2005 Yeah. It's usually used to describe Angela Merkel, I know, but I didn't want to insuate anything. Nothing. Nada. Not really. P.S.: And it would have to be "Dorftrottelin" then, anywho, err how. Quote
neveronfriday Posted June 28, 2005 Author Report Posted June 28, 2005 Name your poison and ask if I have any of it. If you hit one spot on, you'll get the 1,50 back as well. (I promise to give an honest answer) Quote
