new Mosaic set for..... drum roll please...

Recommended Posts

Rumor has it... (and I feel reasonably confident with my source that..) other than the Crusaders box in August...

one of the next ones will be.....

:mellow::o:huh::excited::excited::excited::(:party::party::unsure::unsure:

".....a Buddy Rich small group 50s Verve box coming in November.""""

I will not name my sources... and NO it's not Mark Felt....

Unfortunately, there were no quality horn players available, so Rich got stuck with some guys named Harry Edison, Benny Carter, Milt Bernhart, Georgie Auld, Willie Smith, Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Ben Webster, Frank Wess, Sonny Criss, no-names like that.

Mike

What??? No Al Hirt? No Pete Fountain?? NO BOOTS RANDOLPH????

That's what happens when the producer chooses the sidemen.

the good news is.. I'm VERY confident this is going to happen... :)

the bad news is I know nothing else about this set...

I'm going to have to rely on you experts here.. to fill me (as to your best guess about what's in the set.... who's on it...and do I want it...?)

Buddy Rich Swinging (Norgran 26)

Sing And Swing Wth Buddy Rich (Norgran 1031)

The Wailing Buddy Rich (Norgran 1078)

This One's For Basie (Norgran 1086)

Buddy Rich Sings Johnny Mercer (Verve 2009)

Buddy Rich Just Sings (Verve 2075)

I'm guessing the box could include the above and maybe:

Buddy and Sweets (Norgran 1038)

Basically 1953-1957. Since *small group* has been specifically mentioned, that omits a number of dates (including "Sings Johnny Mercer" and "Sing And Swing" definitely and "This One's For Basie" perhaps). About 7 sessions including a live quartet date. Only one of these has Buddy singing, not playing. Not sure about the inclusion of the "Krupa Meets Rich" album - probably, I would think.

Anyone else find it a bit unsettling that this thread is getting so little response, enthusiastic or otherwise? Can't imagine that bodes well for sales of the set... at least as emanating from our little OrgWorld.

I'm not sure you can make that extrapolation over a few days of response or nonresponse on one small board on the 'net.

And I do suspect that this set may have a lot of "non web user" appeal.

I'd be MORE excited about it if I didn't have the sneaky suspicion I had a good portion of this already!

I don't have any of this stuff, I don't believe - and the lineups sound just grand to me - so count me in.

Re: excitement, well I'm just so far behind on Mosaics in print already, and gradually filling in the "back catalog" of OOP Mosaics on eBay, that I don't get excited about any new offerings from them right away anymore. It will easily be several years before I catch up with this one!

I wasn't going to respond, but since you asked, no, I'm not going to pick this one up. Let's just say that Buddy Rich isn't my cup of tea.

I'll probably pick this up, but I'm in the same boat as Drj - too many others to get first - I never yet bought a Mosaic when it was new, never pre-ordered one... don't have any selects except for the Weston so far (and want probably all except the Pepper Omega/Aladdin).

I have the two Buddy Rich Verve LPRs, so I'll definitely consider getting this set once I know more about what's in it. The only thing that might potentially turn me off to a Buddy Rich set is drum solos. I hate drum solos, and I don't think Mr. Rich realized there was a limit to how much drum soloing people could take. The two LPRs have drum solos all over the place, which is annoying. Fortunately, the rest of the music is quite rewarding.

The next "VERVE 10.000 copies only" box. Please don't get me wrong. I've no problems with this Rich material but since the launch of the SELECTS series the original box releases are a bit discouraged to me.  :(    :beee:

I'm not sure of all the sets they've released since the selects started but I'm very satisfied with many of the recent sets - Basie, Eldridge, Mulligan, Farlow, Jazztet, Columbia Small Group to name my favorites of the recent releases.

This Rich set though has me decidedly underwhelmed. I'm just not a huge fan of those drum solos - at least in the stuff by him that I've heard. I'll pick this one up for sure, but I won't preorder like I did the Basie. I think I'll wait around to see if any of the European releases of the set show up at Caiman or CD Universe mis-prices the set and I get it for $19.98 or something. :w

I was told that Cuscuna said 'There's not much left out there to release'.

BTW Fresh Sound has released the Pepper/Omega in digipack with great sound. It has the 2 Rock and Roll tracks, I don't know if they were released before.
