[Free For All]

I was just on a road trip with a friend who brought his Sirius along. I was very impressed- we listened to an excellent jazz station and several excellent comedy stations. I would consider getting one, but I need to work through a big backlog of CDs before I bring another listening source on board.

I note that that list of Sirius stars fails to mention Gary Burton, who has a show every Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm eastern. Also Nancy Sinatra, who has a show of Frank's music; Marshall Chess, who does a weekly blues show; and Bruce Lundvall, who does a show of Blue Note music every Friday.

Are these satellite radio stations not the culprits (along with Bush's FCC) who are putting small local stations out of business?

Hmmm... It certainly may be a factor, but not everybody is ready to spring the bucks for a satellite receiver and program subscription. What little I've heard of satellite radio is primarily a jukebox format with no personality (or personalities).

I can live without hearing where the local "morning zoo" is handing out bumper stickers.

Well, I did say "what little I've heard," and that is at a friend's house who subscribes to both XM and Sirius. And what I heard there was strictly music with no announcer. So, no personnel info or details on jazz cuts. I'm afraid that isn't of interest to me at all. I'd rather play CDs. The classical programming I heard was the same format but that doesn't bother me as much. In fact, I thought that the Baroque-oriented channel was quite tasty.

And when I referred to locally-focused and community-oriented stations in my other post I was definitely not thinking of the "Morning Zoo" or the local equivalent of Howard Stern. There is (or should be) much more to local programming than that crap. And I totally agree with you that "I can live without hearing" it (and do!)

By the way, here we have two sports channels on the AM dial, one of which will undoubtedly carry the Super Bowl. Both turn their wattage down at sunset, and I can't pick them up after dark. The Super Bowl will have a 6:00 pm kickoff.

It's halftime now. I have watched the TV a little bit, but for the most part have listened to the radio.

I can't pick up the local station that is carrying the game, but I am getting the Giants broadcast on WFAN New York 660 AM clear as a bell.
