While making the drive east, I plan on trying to sample as much good eatin' as possible.

Memphis is one place I would really like to taste some local BBQ.

Any of you folks in or around the Tennessee area know of a good BBQ joint we can hit?

Don't know how far out of your way it is, but if Kansas City is on the itinerary at all, you could end up with some of the best BBQ of your life. I grew up there, but it's been about 10+ years since I lived there, so I'll let some other board members chime in with more specific info.

Of course, Gates & Sons and KC Masterpiece are the most famous, but I bet somebody here has some great smaller recs.

If Atlanta's on the itinerary, Fat Matt's Rib Shack has a really excellent sauce and it's super cheap.

Aside from asking the good foodie folks here there's a site called roadfood.com that can be good to look through. There are forums for BBQ, sandwiches, and so on, along with a "Where Should I Eat" forum devoted to people wanting to know the best eats for various cities and drives.

The site was started by the Sterns who have written guidebooks on road food and also write a column for Gourmet. Most of the site is free though there is a subscriber section as well. I don't visit it that often anymore as reading about the finer hot dogs, pizza and BBQ in other parts of the country can make this Oregon boy wanna cry.

Oh well, we do have great beer here to drown our sorrows in!
