I'm looking specifically to accumulate a few each of: Shirley Scott Richard "Groove" Holmes Jack McDuff Don Patterson Jimmy McGriff Charles Earland Any recommendations welcome. Thanks Edited to add Earland Edited June 26, 2005 by TheMusicalMarine Quote
Soul Stream Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 Patterson "The Exciting New Organ Of" (reissued on CD as Legends of Acid Jazz Patterson Vol. 1) McGriff "I've Got A Woman" McDuff "Live" Groove Holmes "Soul Message" Shirley Scott ....Stanley Turrentine's "Hustlin'" These are the meat and potatoe titles. Many more, but these should be first imho. Quote
GA Russell Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 I second Groove Holmes - Soul Message. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 Well...my recommendation would be to add Charles Earland to the list. Quote
Kalo Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 Sorry, but every time I see this thread title, I keep thinking that it sounds like one of those e-mail come-ons for Viagra... Quote
kh1958 Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 Out of your list, I prefer Charles Earland, including Black Talk and Slammin' and Jammin'. Quote
marcello Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 McDuff "Live" ← Is that the one with "Rock Candy" on it? My God, that's intense! Quote
Soul Stream Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 McDuff "Live" ← Is that the one with "Rock Candy" on it? My God, that's intense! ← Yes, that's the one and you're right. That's about as smokin' as it gets. Quote
king ubu Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 Reading the title of this topic spurred my imagination... lacking "in nuance"? "in subtlety"? "in musicality"? "in whatever respect you may think of?" As for the guys and gals you want recommendations of, I can't help a lot, but these are a few that I have and like: - Turrentine "Hustlin'" (RVG - with Shirley Scott, Burrell, Cranshaw, Fink) - Shirley Scott "Queen of the Organ" (OOP? On Impulse, same band minus Burrell) From Shirley I have two recent Fantasy twofers, "Queen of the Organ Vol. 1" and that other disc collecting two Moodsville albums, which also feature her on piano. Soothing easy blue stuff. Then there's another organ playing Ms Scott you shouldn't miss: Rhoda! Check out this little puppy: Sorry for the bad jpg - it's a duo with Kenny Clarke, and I love it! Guest Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 Try out Larry Young's "Unity" with Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson. Can't go wrong with Jimmy Smith. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 I really like Groove Holme's "Night Glider," "Spicy," "Hot Tat," "Blues All Day Long," "Misty," and "Blue Groove." "After Hours" is reallly good too. Charles Earland's best cd is "Intensity." I really like "Front Burner" as a later effort as well. Jack McDuff's collaboration with Fathead Newman called "Double barrelled Soul" is outstanding. It might be his best. Prestige/Fantasy has reissued a lot of good McDuff dates as well. The two best Don Patterson's aside from the aforementioned, "Genius of the B-3" is "Dem New York Dues" and "Boppin' & Burnin'" You can't miss out on Big John Patton either. Just get the Mosaic select along with "Got a Good thing Goin." And how about Reuben Wilson and Lonnie Smith. My favorite Lonnie Smith is "Move Your Hand." I also like "Think" and "Turning Point." Wilson's "Love Bug" is a classic groove date. Then there's Freddie Roach and Leon Spencer... Quote

Sundog Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 A couple from the last year that I really like are... Dr. Lonnie Smith- Too Damn Hot! and Deep Blue Organ Trio- Deep Blue Bruise Quote
