A Lark Ascending Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 I recall hearing a track I really liked from a Liebman ECM called 'Lookout Farm' which has never reached CD. One of his ECMs was reissued a year or so back. Maybe one day... Quote
sidewinder Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 (edited) That's an excellent album - ECM 1039ST. Has Liebman, Richie Beirach on piano, Frank Tusa on bass and Jeff Williams on drums plus assorted guests including John Abercrombie, Badal Roy and Don Alias. Probably my favourite album by Liebman (not counting the Elvin 'Lighthouse' date for Blue Note). Came across a copy in the second-hand vinyl bins a short while back .... JSngry Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 (edited) There is no doubt that almost all ECM studio sessions from the late 70's on are very well recorded. But it is the mixing and remastering that produced this special sound. The EQ'ing is an important factor. My impression is that they reduce the middle frequencies to produce a more brilliant and "round" sound... This jibes with Purcell's comments exactly. Pulled back mid-range, and jacked-up highend, which is at least as responsible for the "knitting needle" cymbal sound as the types of cymbals and sticks used. Edited July 8, 2003 by JSngry Quote
Claude Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 (edited) Jazzmatazz lists these Steve Kuhn ECM reissues to be released in spring 2004: - Steve Kuhn - Trance (ECM) with Steve Swallow, Jack DeJohnette and Sue Evans; 1974 - Steve Kuhn - Ecstasy (ECM) solo piano; 1975 - Steve Kuhn - Playground (ECM) with Sheila Jordan, Harvie Swartz and Bob Moses; 1979 Edited September 25, 2003 by Claude Quote
GregK Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 I love the deep, "woody" bass sound on ECM records. Particularly on Jarrett's Always Let Me Go. I am also drawn to the covers. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 Some years ago a musician friend told me he'd recently recorded a date for ECM and related this story. During the date Eicher told him something like "on the next take have the sax player use flute". He told Manfred it was his music and his band and he would decide what instrument was needed. My friend told me it didn't matter since Manfred made it sound like a flute in the mix. I related the story to Michael Cuscuna and he repeated it to a writer who published it in a magazine. The musician in question received enough pressure he wrote a letter to the mag denying the entire story. Quote
Claude Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 (edited) The Steve Kuhn reissues announced for spring have still not been released In the meantime, I have found about a dozen of the albums from the above list on mint LPs, most of them in Munich second hand stores, at reasonable prices (5-12 Euro) Edited October 25, 2004 by Claude Quote
sidewinder Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 Just located the Kuhn 'Trance' on vinyl with Jack D - sort of 'of its time' (1975) in term of electric piano sound but a good one none-theless. All of these Kuhns really should be re-released on CD. Quote

tonym Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 i have a big feeling that people who like ECM have a secret society where they all get together and do god knows what. Is ECM overrated? or is the perception one which should be pondered? I personally like all the ECM recordings ive heard, which is not as many as other labels, im sad to say. But if feel that someday i will meet someone or get involved w/ something, that will involve ECM somehow. But i dont know exactly.... I've been having trouble getting on the forum for a couple of days so forgive my tardiness but, "What?" And furthermore, what effing planet are you on aric? Just wondering. Quote

sal Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 I recently picked up the following ECM titles: Keith Jarrett - "Belonging" Dave Holland - "Seeds of Time" John Abercrombie - "The Third Quartet" Haven't listened yet, but will soon. Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 (edited) I recently picked up the following ECM titles: Keith Jarrett - "Belonging" It took me a while to "warm" (ha ha) to the ballads on Belonging. They are terrific. Seeds of Time is a nice record by a good group, but not life-changing. Jewel in the Lotus is fantastic. Guy Edited April 11, 2007 by Guy Quote
mjzee Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 I'm now listening to, and enjoying, the Jan Garbarek & Hilliard Ensemble release "Remember me, my dear." But look at the ECM New Series logo in the upper right corner. The last letter of the word Series is some sort of stylized G or 6. SERIE6? SERIEG? This is repeated on the booklet cover. What does this mean? Quote
