thoughts on "live at montreux" albums...

it is probably because i used to like going to see live music and thought live stuff had more energy or was a more honest presentation of an artist-but i have always like live performances more than studio stuff. and i often see albums, generally OJCs, live at montreux, by artists i like such as gary bartz and flora purim and bobby hutcherson. but the montreux perfomances never seem very good. well an exception would be mccoy tyner's "enlightenment" i guess, which is powerful. but i am usually pretty let down by "live at montreux" stuff i hear. is this because montrux was considered a very commercial gig? i know little about what went down there but i guess i imagine there were a lot of groups playing in limited time and it was a large thing so maybe it was just considered an easy commercial gig and the musicians weren't necessarily playing with much heart. or maybe my expectations are too high. i don't know. anyone go back in the 70s or have an opinion on this?

yeah it didn't do it for me. i had it and sold it.

i have some bobby hutcherson bootlegs and i like em all better. for that matter i like all the boby hutcherson studio stuff better too.

i'm not a woody shaw guy too much, which might have something to do with it.

also i didn't find the rhythm section inspirational.

I could not agree with you more--a fantastic recording.

I can't speak for all of the records you mention, but Bobby Hutcherson - Live at Montreux is a fantastic set. Woody Shaw is great!

The Benny Carter 4 Montreux '77 (OJC) features some of my favorite playing by him on record. Ray Bryant and NHOP don't hurt, either.

They've just released that on DVD too... fine, fine stuff.

Those eighties Miles appearances in the box set are among the best eighties Miles I've heard. . . .

Listening to one of the discs right now! Couldn't agree more... :tup

That's a blind spot for me in my Miles knowledge. Are any of the recordings available individually?

No, not officially. . . .

There is one two cd set within the box that is from 1974 I believe, the rest are from the eighties and up. . . .

Good stuff from a period of Miles I'm not that keen of overall.

Probably in time they'll appear individually from Sony or Warners or SOMEONE. I mean. . . if there's a dollar to be made on Miles someone will be making it over the next hundred years or so. . . . :w

Also the recent Mingus at Montreux DVD, and there's an excellent Gene Ammons at Montreux (with Dexter Gordon and Cannonball Adderley on one extended jam session).

I don't know that much about the history of Montreux, but the liners to the McCann/Harris disc talk about the early years, when it was just a weekend in summer... now it has turned into a huge (and very commercial) event that spans a month or so, has two main stages plus numerous small venues, is sponsored by Heineken, thus you're not allowed to drink any beer there (unless Heineken fits your idea of "beer" ). Jazz is being played a bit more again, nowadays, but I remember that often during the last ten or so years, there were only three or four nights of jazz in the programme, all else world, funk, soul, rock/pop, whatever brought in the crowds... "jazz" in the title is but a selling argument ("jazz" is sexy, you know? Even YSL came to that conclusion...).

I never bothered to go there, but I assume that back in the day (sixties, maybe into the late seventies?) it must have been a great venue to check out mainstream jazz of all kinds.

Of course the Evans and Carter discs are favourites, too, and there's a great RRK disc, too:

I was there in 1978 and saw quite a few good shows.

OTOH, I watched the Mingus DVD and thought that it was certainly lacking in energy. Hard to believe considering that the band had George Adams, Don Pullen, Dannie Richmond and Jack Walrath.

I wish they would unleash that set from '74 on its own. They could hype it to the kids and sell a few more, no?
