wolff Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 (edited) Seems like there could be great sets from artists that recorded for Prestige/New Jazz, Contemporary and Riverside. Why didn't Mosaic ever go after these? Fantasy sure seemed to very liberal in licensing their titles. Edited June 20, 2005 by wolff Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 (edited) Ummm - because Fantasy did their own excellent complete boxed sets and had a wonderful record of keeping material reissued and available? Mike Edited June 20, 2005 by Michael Fitzgerald Quote
DrJ Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 Well, I can see both of your points...but now that Concord has bought the catalogs in question, and it seems as though a lot of material stands to go out of print, now would be a GREAT time for Mosaic to revisit this idea. And while I enjoyed Fantasy's boxed sets, there were way too few of them IMHO. Quote
bertrand Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 I agree that if the Fantasy catalogue starts going amok under Concord, this would be an idea for Michael C. to pursue. I also agree with Mike that they have been doing a good job so far. If Blue Note had been doing what Fantasy did, Mosaic would probably never have been launched. The initial impetus seemed to focus on Blue Note stuff, although not exclusively. From the list on their site (on the last chance page), among #101-120, all but four are Blue Note or Pacific Jazz. If this does happen, what would be good ideas for box sets from the Fantasy catalog? A lot of the stuff not yet reissued by Fantasy is from artists with only a few titles on the label(s), so that might be tricky. Any obvious omissions that anyone can think of? Bertrand. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 The only thing I could see them doing are Selects on artists like Curtis Counce, Lem Winchester, etc., as well as a ton of Bluesville artists. But that's if, and only if Concord/Fantasy begins to delete titles. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 There are more than you think: Miles Davis - Complete Prestige John Coltrane - Complete Prestige (sans Miles sessions) Sonny Rollins - Complete Prestige Thelonious Monk - Complete Prestige Thelonious Monk - Complete Riverside Wes Montgomery - Complete Riverside Bill Evans - Complete Riverside Bill Evans - Complete Fantasy Sonny Rollins - Freelance Years (Riverside, Contemporary, Period) Art Pepper - Complete Galaxy Art Pepper - Complete Village Vanguard Modern Jazz Quartet - Complete Prestige Eric Dolphy - Complete Prestige Art Tatum - Complete Pablo solo Art Tatum - Complete Pablo group Charles Mingus - Complete Debut Dexter Gordon - Complete Prestige etc. etc. My wish list: Mongo Santamaria - Complete Fantasy & Riverside Cal Tjader - Complete 1950's Fantasy Studio Cal Tjader - Complete 1950's Fantasy live Cal Tjader - Complete 1970's Fantasy & Galaxy Don Patterson & Sonny Stitt - Complete Prestige & Jazzland Don Patterson - Complete Prestige (sans Stitt) Booker Ervin - Complete Prestige Latin Jazz Quintet - Complete Prestige Quote
Brad Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 I can't ever see that happening and after seeing Mike's post, I now see why. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 One must give Fantasy credit for being quite substantial in establishing multi-disc box sets - IIRC the Miles Davis Prestige box (I still have the LP version) was the first of its kind. Mosaic was several years later. Quote
DrJ Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 (edited) While I agree there are a lot, there could be a lot more (and that could include smaller "Mosaic Select" type boxes). In addition to those listed by Mike: Complete Gigi Gryce New Jazz Recordings Complete Red Garland Prestige Recordings (that would be a BIG box) Complete Walt Dickerson New Jazz Recordings Complete Jaki Byard Prestige/New Jazz Recordings Complete Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis Jazzland Recordings Notice that all these folks are well-loved by jazz afficionados but not "marquee" names - which frankly is what the Fantasy boxes have focused on. Great, but how about the less heralded folks? Enter Mosaic??? Again I'm not saying necessarily RIGHT NOW for any of these hypothetical sets, but IF some of the individual titles go out of print. Also worth noting: one thing that has always irked me about Fantasy's single CD reissues is that often they are REALLY short and they COULD have readily fit 2 LPs on a single CD but chose not to. In that context their pricing is really not that great a bargain. If someone like Mosaic started issuing Selects it might actually be better value for money as 4 or even 5 LPs could fit in a 3 CD set...and those of us who have not been able to keep up with Fantasy's literally 100s of single CD issues could start to fill in holes more cost effectively. Chuck Nessa Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 While I agree there are a lot, there could be a lot more (and that could include smaller "Mosaic Select" type boxes). In addition to those listed by Mike: Complete Gigi Gryce New Jazz Recordings Complete Red Garland Prestige Recordings (that would be a BIG box) Complete Walt Dickerson New Jazz Recordings Complete Jaki Byard Prestige/New Jazz Recordings Complete Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis Jazzland Recordings Since the majority of this material is available, what's to gain with boxes? Want stuff to take to the used store? Want more packages you rarely play? Want something to flog on ebay? I really don't get it. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Not every artist really needs or deserves a boxed set. I see absolutely no reason why there should be a Gigi Gryce boxed set when all the Fantasy-owned stuff has been issued on excellent single CDs. They were (maybe still are) very easy to find and were reasonably priced. Ditto for the Dickerson. And I think the Byard too (has anything not been put on CD, either Prestige or OJC?). Mike Quote
Brad Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 I think Chuck's (and Mike's) post highlight the difference. Until now, all previously issued on cd Fantasy material has been generally available in cd whereas Mosaic specializes in a lot if what is not available. Quote
Kalo Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 How come Mosaic hasn't released any boxed sets of Concord artists? Quote
Kalo Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Even better idea: now that Concord has cleared so much warehouse space by deleting unneccesary OJCs, why don't they re-release OOP Mosaics? Quote
Kalo Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Why doesn't Concord (or Mosaic) Name Three People? Or are either or both against addictive games? Quote
Kalo Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Why doesn't Mosaic release single discs? (Or was that another thread?) Quote
