RonF Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 The usual stellar trio, Peter Washington, Kenny Washington joined by Phil Woods, Frank Wess, Nicholas Payton and Slide Hampton. Damn nice arrangements. Charlap and the trio are as tasty as ever. Thumb way up. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Our jazz director played a nice track from this just yesterday... looking forward to hearing the whole CD. Quote
Bol Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 Do the 4 horn players play together? Or is the CD like "Stardust" in that only one guest will play on any one song? Quote
Alfred Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 A new release of Charlap is always on my short list. Quote
RonF Posted June 17, 2005 Author Report Posted June 17, 2005 Do the 4 horn players play together? Or is the CD like "Stardust" in that only one guest will play on any one song? ← Bol, Horns are together on 3 tracks - Somebody Loves Me, A Foggy Day, Nice Work If You Can Get It. Frank Wess solos on 2 tracks - How Long Has This Been Going On, Bess, You Is My Woman Now. A great round of solos on S'Wonderful. The trio is featured on remaining of 10 tracks. Quote
Kalo Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 When I interviewed Charlap last year he was very excited about this project. I look forward to hearing it. Quote

Brad Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 Sounds like a must. I haven't been that thrilled with some of his offerings lately. Nice but sort of blah. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 How does it compare to the recent Charlap release on Venus? Quote
Brad Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 I assumed this out but it looks like it's not due to be released until next week. Quote
JSngry Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Been hearing this on KNTU and have been wondering who the marvelously mature tenorist on "How Long..." was. Frank Wess, eh? No wonder! Quote
jlhoots Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Any thoughts on this one? ← Well worth it. Disclaimer: I'm a big Charlap fan. Quote

James Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Caught the trio here in S.D. last night. Easily one of the best performances of the last couple of years. Luckily, I was able to be at the venue for both the early and late sets. The second set concluded with a mind-melting West Side Story medley - performed by the group without music. Ballads, burners, and everything in between --- all interesting takes on standards. The amazing thing is that I would have missed the performance completely had I not been called on [last minute!] to dash to a music store for replacement drum heads for Kenny Washington! Through rush hour traffic I was able to make the delivery so that the concert started just ten minutes late. What a treat. Quote

montg Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 I've heard a couple of Gershwin tracks on radio recently that really grabbed my attention. Each time it turned out to be a track from this CD. Charlap playing Gershwin does not, on the surface, appear to be a winner for me (you know, hasn't this been done before, Bill) but after hearing some of it, it may be worth picking up. Quote
