Peter Johnson Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 (edited) Does anyone know how to do this, possibly by connecting the P.C.'s with an ethernet cable? Will they "see" each other this way ( )? Is some kind of app required? Sorry, I'm cluless about this kind of stuff! Thanks for any assistance! Edited June 14, 2005 by Peter Johnson Quote
Use3D Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 No that doesn't work. Have a cd writer? WinXP can write discs from within the operating system if you have a writable drive. That's the easiest way. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted June 14, 2005 Author Report Posted June 14, 2005 Wasn't there a program in Win98 called "Direct Cable Connection" that would allow this? Has it been 86'ed from XP? Quote
couw Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 I believe there are USB cables that enable you to connect two machines that are not on a LAN. Simply plug in on either end and hope Microsoft holds what it promises and all goes without further ado. Probably costs 10$ or so. Quote
BERIGAN Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 (edited) I used aloha bob a few years back, it worked pretty well....seems more expensive than I remembered http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...ftware&n=507846 ummm....ignore what I just posted!!! indigo Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 It depends on the size of the files, the volume of material in total, and the frequency with which you want to do this. For small stuff (smaller files, total of less than, say, 1 GB), a USB key (a.k.a. thumb drive, pen drive) would be the way to do it. For big stuff (like audio files) not transferred that often, you might try an external hard drive. For frequent transfers on an on-demand basis, your best bet is a permanent connection. The easiest way would be to network the machines with a router. Quote
Claude Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Of course it works with ethernet, but for direct connection between two PCs (no hub/switch) a crossover ethernet cable must be used Setting up a home network between two computers Quote
