B. Goren. Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 This is probably one of the best tributes I have recently listened to. A duo recording of Steve Lacy not with his favorite partner, Waldron, but with another pianist, Eric Watson. To be honest, I am not familiar at all with Watson and I have no ides what else he has done in his career, but there is no doubt in mind that if Lacy decided to record with him, he must know something about jazz. I find this recording very enjoyable. Steve lacy sounds great and also Watson plays some very impressive solo. Great interpretation of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. If you like Mingus compositions and if you like Steve Lacy's playing, you will not be disappointed. Any other recommended recordings of Watson??? Quote
brownie Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Watson - who has been living in Paris for a long time now - has also recorded the highly recommended opus 'Your Tonight Is My Tomorrow' for Owl with Steve Lacy, Jean-Paul Celea on bass and Aaron Scott on drums. 1987 session. Got this on vinyl but I think it's also available on CD. Can't compare with the Mingus tribute which I never heard! Quote
king ubu Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 Thanks brownie. ← These are two Lacys to add to my list, it seems! I have Watson's "Full Metal Quartet" (on Owl, too), with Bennie Wallace, and I love that one! Quote

Seriously: I was astonished to find him in this company - at the time I picked that CD up I only knew Thigpen from OP and a late Teddy Wilson date... would have never imagined him to do this kind of stuff! But he definitely is a terrific drummer, capable of fitting in with almost any situation. Quote

Д.Д. Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 I have a couple of Watson CDs - in addition to this MIngus tribute (which is good indeed), Silent Hearts (with Dresser and Thigpen, again) on SUnnyside, and Conspiracy with Pual Motian and Ed Schuller (Owl). Haven't listened to either for the trio discs for a long time, so can't comment on the quality of the music yet. Will check and get back here. Quote
brownie Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 Latest opus from Eric Watson with his current group: http://www.actmusic.com/act9429_e.htm Have not heard that one yet! Quote

In the hard-blowing and driving style of the "Full Metal" band, only, of course, with different musicians. And let me add: Marguet is a great drummer! Edited June 12, 2005 by king ubu Quote
kh1958 Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 I have the Lacy/Watson Mingus tribute, and it is indeed a good one. I especially like their versions of Free Cell Block F, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Remember Rockefellar at Attica. Quote

kh1958 Posted June 13, 2005 Report Posted June 13, 2005 Yes, a favorite record of mine, and just prior to its recording, November 19, 1974, was the night of my sole fortunate opportunity to see Mr. Mingus and this group. I have the Lacy/Watson Mingus tribute, and it is indeed a good one.
