Dan Gould Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 SV, I pulled out the Benny Carter Summer Serenade disc and give it a big thumbs up. Kenny Drew and Benny are in fine fettle, my only complaint would be that Richard Boone's vocal on "All That Jazz" was unnecessary, and a few more tunes from Carter's pen would have been welcome instead of the predictable standards (Indiana, Almost Like Being in Love, Taking a Chance on Love). Still, what is here is topnotch. Definitely grab it! Quote
jazzbo Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 I don't know quite how to begin. . . I would say if you are familiar with other contemporaneous works by these artists you would like these Storyville releases. The Wild Bill Davisons are very good, in keeping with the excellent work he was doing at this time (at all times, really.) If you like the George Lewis work on other labels, you'll like these; sound is decent and nice representations of his playing at the time. (The Dragon "George Lewis in Sweden" is also very good!) The Armstrong and the Young are. . . well its Pops and Pres---and good examples. Quote
