montg Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 The Verve LPR series is turning out to be a great reissue program. great music, remastering, and such a range of music (surely something for everyone). And, supposedly, a limited run, with some going out of print soon. I have about 7 or so, with my favorites being Billy Mitchell and Sweets. What are some favorites and hidden gems in this series? I've provided a complete list below. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Julian Cannonball Adderley Cannonball Adderley Vacation At The Concord Machito Alexandria The Great Lorez Alexandria My Kinda Swing Ernestine Anderson Patato & Totico Patato & Totico Afro-Harping Dorothy Ashby Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe Albert Ayler King Of Swing Count Basie Songs I Love To Sing Brook Benton 'S Make It Art Blakey A New Dimension Willie Bobo Jazz Cello Ray Brown Chicken Fat Mel Brown 1975: The Duets Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond At Newport The Gigi Gryce-Donald Byrd Jazz Laboratory & The Cecil Taylor Quartet Candido Candido Camero Swing Around Rosie Rosemary Clooney The Al Cohn Quintet Featuring Bob Brookmeyer Al Cohn Waiter, Ask The Man To Play The Blues Freddy Cole Soul Sisters Gloria Coleman Quartet Universal Consciousness Alice Coltrane Cugi's Cocktails Xavier Cugat After The Ball Frank D'rone My Gentleman Friend Blossom Dearie Soubrette: Sings Broadway Hit Songs Blossom Dearie Mr. Clarinet Buddy DeFranco Buddy And Sweets Buddy Rich & Harry 'Sweets' Edison Sweets Harry "Sweets" Edison Steel Guitar Jazz Buddie Emmons California Here I Come Bill Evans The Jazztet At Birdhouse The Jazztet Whisper Not Ella Fitzgerald Sings Sweet Songs For Swingers Ella Fitzgerald Hello Love Ella Fitzgerald I Love John Frigo…He Swings John Frigo Slim Gaillard Rides Again! montg Posted June 7, 2005 Author Report Posted June 7, 2005 Snap Your Fingers Al Grey I've been meaning to pick this one up, if for no other reason than Billy Mitchell and Bobby Hutcherson are among the sidemen. A lot of those Argo Al Grey recordings remain unissued--perhaps a good Mosaic set? Quote
Brad Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 A couple of faves are the Sweets recent disc and the Billy Mitchell. There's also the Dizzy one, Afro, the Yuseef Lateef (that's phenomenal). Sonny Stitt is pretty good too, the Mulligan, the Evans. Christ, they're so many that are good. Quote
king ubu Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 (edited) This is a great little series! I have trouble keeping up! The only non mini-LP one I have so far is the Lateef, and I think there are still a few from the first few batches (soon to be OOP) that I need... Here's a list of threads discussing them: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...cs&highlite=lpr ubu Edited June 8, 2005 by king ubu Quote
vibes Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 There are many, many CDs in this series that are not to be missed. When I stopped to think about it, I realized that I probably listen to at least one LPR per day. I've learned about a lot of great music through this series that I otherwise wouldn't be aware of. Some favorites: Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond - 1975: The Duets Archie Shepp - Attica Blues Tony Scott - Tony Scott John Klemmer - Involvement Dave Pike - Manhattan Latin Machito - Vacation at the Concord Billy Mitchell - This is Billy Mitchell Al Grey - Snap Your Fingers Gabor Szabo - High Contrast I haven't seen too many positive reviews for it out there, but I've also been listening to "Cugi's Cocktails" a lot lately. Yeah, it's lounge music, but it's laid back and catchy. The wife likes it too, which is always a plus. Quote

John L Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 On the other hand, I guess that the inclusion of New Grass in this series means that they are no longer planning the much discussed 2-disc reissue with all of the previously unreleased material on it. Quote

There are many excellent albums here, but some of them shouldn't have been LPRs. The one that gets me is RRK's Live in Copenhagen, where they actually left off the extra concert material that's been released elsewhere just so that they could recreate the LP order exactly. That said, some of upcoming releases look to be great! Quote

That said, some of upcoming releases look to be great! ← Yes - someone quoted Cuscuna saying soemthing like the LPR series being a smack in the face of the reissues community... That's the one point about the series that sucks indeed. Other case in point: the Lee Konitz "Motion" - they should keep the 3CD set in print! This is among the best stuff Lee put on disc, and Lee is one of the most fascinating improvisers jazz has produced... goddammit! I think I paid 80$ or something crazy for that 3CD set - that was before my internet days, and probably quite some time after it had been OOP... Quote
sidewinder Posted September 2, 2005 Report Posted September 2, 2005 I still miss that Verve Elite series, of which the 'Motion' 3CD set was one. That series set a definitive benchmark for jazz reissues. Quote

That series set a definitive benchmark for jazz reissues. ← The fact that this series continued into 1999 (or were the last four releases even from 2000?) was like a strange leftover from the earlier days when Verve did the reissue thing as it should be done... So it was only right they discontinued the series. It may have added to their credibility, and that's not what they care about. Quote

That series set a definitive benchmark for jazz reissues. ← Amen. I love the Verve Elite series, and have never regretted having purchased them (I have all of them except for the Lalo Schifrin, which is just too expensive). I come back to them very frequently, especially the one I'm using for my avatar. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 2, 2005 Report Posted September 2, 2005 I find that. like Mosaics, they are a very effective 'enabler' into artists and styles that I haven't yet got into. Good examples on that Verve Elite series were the Schifrin, Herb Ellis, Paul Quinichette and Roy Eldridge. Quote

I think the Jazztet was my first exposure to the group (neither to Farmer nor Golson on their own, though), same for the Quinichette and Edison and Ellis. The Schifrin I love! And another highlight was that Modern Jazz Societey presents disc! And then those by artists who made very few recordings on their own were cool too, such as the Billy Bauer and the Laurence Brown! Big fan of that series! Quote

Guest akanalog Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 yeah i thought a batch was coming out yesterday including some gato and michael white. did it? i didn't see them at the virgin records down the block. also-what's the deal with the downloadable albums? anyone do this? i see a few ok ones i would be interested in. these will never be on disc? it's lame some can only be purchased from the real store, which doesn't necessarily support mac browsers. but do people use this verve service? i never knew about it. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 My copy of the Gato was shipped to me by cduniverse Saturday, so I think they're out. I've downloaded about a dozen of the VerveVault items. I haven't downloaded any of the Real Player one, just iTunes. . . . I love them. I think this is a great service. They sound great! Quote
king ubu Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Is the Gato "Chapter 4 - Live in NY"? If so: it's out, in a jewel pack edition... same as the Lateef and several other new and old titles (Satchmo, Shirley Horn... can't remember, saw a dozen or more in a store yesterday, and they're not labelled as LPRs but as some new series - forgot how it's called. Prize is cheap, and funny enough at least one of the releases is at the same time available in the expensive VME edition... I don't understand Verve...) Quote
