LAL Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 My unbiased opinion is that this is an absolute must have set. ...for Duke feenatiks that is. :rsmile: Was pleasantly surprised by the mostly excellent sound quality which are as good as if not better than the live material from the same period by the big name labels. There's periodic background noise ala clinking of glasses and chatter, but those are minor irritations. If I recall properly (last listened several years back), Duke gets a bit more space for soloing, when he does play, compared to many of his other band recordings. As you've seen from the lineup, this is a stellar cast of musicians. Don't know if you'll think lesser of the sessions cause Hodges ain't there. I don't. Quote
brownie Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 Everything that LAL said! Cheap box with with superb music. Found the box which I had never heard about during a visit to Tower back in my NY visiting days. There still is a $27,99 price tag on the wrapper. Stanley Dance wrote the notes for each of the discs. Playing time is a bit short, about 40 minutes for each CD. The whole thing might have been squeezed into 3 discs (hello Mosaic, anyone there???) but I'm not complaining! Quote
EKE BBB Posted June 7, 2005 Author Report Posted June 7, 2005 So, there´s a boxset. I´ve only seen them as separate discs, on ebay, for around 9 or 10 dollars each. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 Yes, they were first released as a set, just the five discs in a paper wrapper surround "box". . . . I'm with the two gentlemen above: I bought this shortly after it first appeared and it's one incredible bargain! Quote
medjuck Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 (edited) It's nice to hear the band in an informal setting but I must admit I don't enjoy this as much as most of my other Ellington recordings. It does give you a sense of how loose they could be in person. And it is ( or they are) a bargain. Also I think this is one of the sets where they play Ornithology as part of How High the Moon. brownie Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 Agustin, since you found out about those Happy Birthday discs, are you aware of the two CD set from Roulette that came out as Duke Ellington Live at the Blue Note? Thought I already had this as a Vogue/Roulette CD that came out under the same title. But this one turned out to be different. The Roulette 2CD has music from three sets recorded at the Blue Note club on August 9, 1959 with the band in royal form. None of the information is listed in either the Timner book or the Lord discography (at least in the paper version). Thoroughly recommended set produced by Michael Cuscuna, remixed and edited by Malcolm Addey. Another one to get if you don't have it! Quote

I don't have the B-day set, but being quite a fan of the stuff collected on the Capitol set, this should indeed be mine, some day... I see Caiman has it for 18 € on Amazon.de Quote
EKE BBB Posted June 29, 2005 Author Report Posted June 29, 2005 Just starting to listen to this set. My impressions so far: Sound´s OK and the music is good, but I´m with Joe: you can find better live recordings of this period: Pasadena, Hamilton... They should have included recording date. Well, obviously you can find it in any Ellington discography. -_- But of course, it´s very highly enjoyable music! (will I ever find a disappointing EKE disc?) Quote
