jazzmessenger
How hard is it to obtain contents of the following Mosaic sets as individual CDs (not Mosaic partials)? I think most of the Jazz Messengers and Lee Morgan sets can be had as individual CDs, but I am not sure. Are the discographies of each set still availble online? 120 The Complete Recordings of the Paul Desmond Quartet with Jim Hall 121 The Complete Blue Note 45 Sessions of Ike Quebec 131 The Complete Recordings of the Stan Getz Quintet with Jimmy Raney 137 The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Larry Young 141 The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Art Blakey’s 1960 Jazz Messengers 145 The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Don Cherry 147 The Complete Serge Chaloff Sessions 151 The Complete Solid State Recordings of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra 154 The Complete February 1957 Jimmy Smith Blue Note Sessions 159 The Phil Woods Quartet/Quintet 20th Anniversary Set 161 The Complete Blue Note Andrew Hill Sessions (1963-66) 162 The Complete Blue Note Lee Morgan Fifties Sessions
Michael Fitzgerald
The Woods has never been (and probably will never be) available outside of the Mosaic set. See my website for full discographical details of the Don Cherry (in the Henry Grimes discography) and Andrew Hill sets. Mike
bertrand
For the Larry Young, Art Blakey and Lee Morgan sets, I think they were OOP before the Mosaic web site ever existed, so no 'Mosaic style' discography there. I can give you the names of the corresponding albums/CDs with their availability status. If you want the contents, you can find a very rough draft (typos and all) at jazzdisco.org which has the entire BN discography. But this site is full of errors. Note that the entire Blakey set is currently available on CD now that Like Someone In Love is out as an RVG; this is the first time this has ever happened (except for the Mosaic). Art Blakey The Big Beat (RVG) A Night In Tunisia (RVG) Like Someone In Love (RVG) Roots And Herbs (regular reissue) The Witch Doctor (regular reissue) The Freedom Rider (regular reissue) Meet Me At The Jazz Corner Of The World (2-CD RVG) The 5 tracks that were part of the Japanese-only LP Pisces are split among the Roots And Herbs and Freedom Rider CDs Lee Morgan Indeed! Volume Two Volume Three (OOP) City Lights The Cooker Candy (regular reissue) Four of these have never been on CD in the U.S. (amazing!). They all have been out on CD in Japan (without the bonus track for Volume Three and The Cooker) as TOCJs and JRVGs. Volume Three was out in the U.S. with the bonus track, but now long OOP (it never made the Collectors' Choice series). So, to put together this set, you'll need to spring for Japanese pressings (except for Candy), and you'll be missing two alternates. Larry Young Talkin' About (Grant Green) (regular reissue) Street Of Dreams (Grant Green) (regular reissue) I Want To Hold Your Hand (Grant Green) (regular reissue) Into Somethin' (Connoisseur) Unity (RVG) Of Love And Peace (Connoisseur) Contrasts Heaven On Earth Mother Ship (Connoisseur) Contrasts and Heaven On Earth have never been out on CD anywhere, so you can't make a complete box. Also, it is rumored that there are four usable alternates to Unity that have yet to be issued. They are not listed in the BN discography. Bertrand. jazzmessenger
Thanks for the info! Does anyone know what's on the Jimmy Smith set? When did Mosaic start releasing CDs (along with LPs)?
brownie
When did Mosaic start releasing CDs (along with LPs)? ← Mosaic was allowed to release CD sets from the Summer of 1989 Up until that time, the companies that leased their material to Mosaic only allowed the transfers to vinyls! Michael Fitzgerald
Remember that there were LP sets that LATER got CD-ified. For example, the Mulligan/Baker I have on CD, but it was LP-only at first. NOT every LP-only got this deal, only a selected few. Alfred
STAN GETZ: The still in print 3CD set Stan Getz - the complete ROOST recordings" covers most of the material. DON CHERRY: Complete communion is the only album which is available at the moment. Symphony for improvisors was released as a Connoisseur but it is OOP. A RVG release is planned for summer 2005 (that is what Blue Note means with "limited edition" -_- ). Where is Brooklyn? will be released as a Conn in October. IKE QUEBEC: The complete 45 sessions will be released as a 2CD set later this year.
Brad
This is not a totally helpful answer to your question but see the Paul Desmond Google Discography Page for general discographical information. Regarding the individual cds, I think a lot of them are around still, some in stores, some online.
