Harold_Z Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 I have to sell my 9 year old car and can't find the original bill of sale ! Anybody know if the Bill of Sale forms that you can download on the internet are legal and acceptable ? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 I would not trust 'em. Call the DMV (or whatever it's called in NY) and ask about getting a copy of the title. Quote
Harold_Z Posted June 2, 2005 Author Report Posted June 2, 2005 Thanks Chuck. I kinda was thinking what you posted, but was hoping they were cool. It would be so easy ! Quote
maren Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 (edited) I don't know about New Jersey, but in New York you would need the title from the DMV -- not the original bill of sale. For your new bill of sale (to your new buyer), the downloadable ones work fine in New York. I found the New York State DMV website very clear and helpful (no sarcasm!!!!) and I'm looking for the official New Jersey one -- Probably a lot easier than a phone call! EDIT: the links I originally posted were NOT official NJ state links... oops. Edited June 2, 2005 by maren Quote
maren Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 Official New Jersey site: http://www.dmv-department-of-motor-vehicle...or_vehicles.htm (unfortunately doesn't seem to cover all aspects of sale as fully as New York's) Quote
catesta Posted June 3, 2005 Report Posted June 3, 2005 It should be the same. I'm pretty sure the title is always considered the official proof of ownership and any transfer of. A generic bill of sale will work fine, as it's just a formality. Quote
