i saw the collective last april in chicago and later bought the single cd compilation. for the life of me, i can't understand how they can charge the same amount ($35) for the new 2cd set as they do for the earlier 3cd set. i won't be purchasing the new one at that price.

the booklet says all the music the musicians wanted to include fitted on 2 cd's so they decided to make it a 2 cd set. Strange they didn't lower the price but I'm sure they will use it to keep up the good work they ar doing. Great 2 cd set imo.

Yeah, but I still feel burned. I think the pre-order said it would be a three CD set. Not only that, they sent me two copies, and I have to pay to mail one back from the UK! Quite frankly, I feel I am getting hosed and don't think I will pre-order the 2006 set. I think the price should reflect what you are getting. If the 2006 set is a 2-CD set at this price, I won't order it.

According to Alan's jazzmatazz site, the single CD of the second season, released by Nonesuch, is due on March 14. I really enjoyed the music from the 2004 season (Ornette)--really looking forward to this new release.

Why are they bothering to make a one cd compilation from what was only a 2 cd release to start with? I would much rather purchase the 2 disc set (based on how much I like their previous release), but wish the price was better. Doesn't make sense to me that it's the same price as the 3 cd set.

Keeping in mind the prices of CDs by some sellers I think the 3CD first season was a bargain and the 2CD second season is worth the price. Good music.

Not a comment on the talent involved in this group or the quality of the CDs, but the fact that this band made up largely of carpet-baggers is somehow dubbed the "SF Jazz Collective" remains a minor travesty. Not that anyone in the local scene takes the increasingly conservative & corporate SF Jazz decision making seriously, but it's still a slap in the face of a vibrant, diverse, and chronically under-recognized local scene. Sadly, doing nothing for the Bay Area jazz scene is a hallmark of Joshua Redman's stint as SF Jazz' artistic director. Maybe it's not surprising, considering the only time I've run across Mr. Redman 'playing in the clubs' was back when I lived in NYC.

Sorry for the mild rant.

14 minute version of Coltrane's "Africa" on the new CD. I'm liking that Zenon tune "2and2." Played Nicholas Payton's trumpet solo on "When Will the Blues Leave" over and over from that first disc. Ornette's themes catch me -- people say the meeting between John Coltrane and Don Cherry and Ornette's rhythm section ("The Avant Garde," Atlantic) didn't work, but the world without their version of "The Blessing" would be less of a swinging place.
