Alfred Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 #57 of an edition of 3.000 arrived yesterday. 130 minutes of excellent music. Recommended! Quote
robviti Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 i saw the collective last april in chicago and later bought the single cd compilation. for the life of me, i can't understand how they can charge the same amount ($35) for the new 2cd set as they do for the earlier 3cd set. i won't be purchasing the new one at that price. tranemonk Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 does anyone know exactly WHY they made it 2 cds Vs. 3??? Any West Coast board members care to give them a call??? thanks! Quote
Bluerein Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 the booklet says all the music the musicians wanted to include fitted on 2 cd's so they decided to make it a 2 cd set. Strange they didn't lower the price but I'm sure they will use it to keep up the good work they ar doing. Great 2 cd set imo. Quote

I think the pre-order said it would be a three CD set. Not only that, they sent me two copies, and I have to pay to mail one back from the UK! Quite frankly, I feel I am getting hosed and don't think I will pre-order the 2006 set. I think the price should reflect what you are getting. If the 2006 set is a 2-CD set at this price, I won't order it. Quote
montg Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 According to Alan's jazzmatazz site, the single CD of the second season, released by Nonesuch, is due on March 14. I really enjoyed the music from the 2004 season (Ornette)--really looking forward to this new release. Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 Why are they bothering to make a one cd compilation from what was only a 2 cd release to start with? I would much rather purchase the 2 disc set (based on how much I like their previous release), but wish the price was better. Doesn't make sense to me that it's the same price as the 3 cd set. Quote
relyles Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 Keeping in mind the prices of CDs by some sellers I think the 3CD first season was a bargain and the 2CD second season is worth the price. Good music. Quote
Alexander Posted March 18, 2006 Author Report Posted March 18, 2006 For those who haven't picked up the two-disc set, the single disc version of the second SF Jazz Collective season is available. I got it on Tuesday, and it is wonderful stuff... Quote

Doesn't say how many CDs. perhaps that's because it hasn't been recorded yet. from the website: By ordering the CD in advance, you’ll be doing more than taking advantage of a great offer on some exceptional music—you’ll also help underwrite the cost of recording and producing this keepsake CD set. The Collective will be on tour throughout the U.S. and in Europe in March and April, and SFJAZZ’s sound engineers will make high-end concert recordings all along the way. Your early support of this project through CD pre-ordering will help underwrite the recording process and the CD mixing, mastering, and production to follow over the summer. btw, i just got the single cd of the collective's second season, and i think i like it better than the first season. nathan Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Not a comment on the talent involved in this group or the quality of the CDs, but the fact that this band made up largely of carpet-baggers is somehow dubbed the "SF Jazz Collective" remains a minor travesty. Not that anyone in the local scene takes the increasingly conservative & corporate SF Jazz decision making seriously, but it's still a slap in the face of a vibrant, diverse, and chronically under-recognized local scene. Sadly, doing nothing for the Bay Area jazz scene is a hallmark of Joshua Redman's stint as SF Jazz' artistic director. Maybe it's not surprising, considering the only time I've run across Mr. Redman 'playing in the clubs' was back when I lived in NYC. Sorry for the mild rant. nathan Quote

bertrand Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I wondered about that actually. Anyway, I'm going tomorrow not for Joshua or the SF name, but for Hutch and Renee. What Hancock tunes will be on the CD? I can't seem to find a track listing. Bertrand. Quote
bertrand Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Add March 22: Strathmore Hall Arts Center, Rockville MD. Not mentioned on Renee Rosnes' website for some odd reason. Bertrand. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 14 minute version of Coltrane's "Africa" on the new CD. I'm liking that Zenon tune "2and2." Played Nicholas Payton's trumpet solo on "When Will the Blues Leave" over and over from that first disc. Ornette's themes catch me -- people say the meeting between John Coltrane and Don Cherry and Ornette's rhythm section ("The Avant Garde," Atlantic) didn't work, but the world without their version of "The Blessing" would be less of a swinging place.
