Dave James Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 (edited) Alan's website still says that the Freddie Slack and Johnny Richards Selects will be released sometime this month. Mum's the word on the Mosaic website. That's a little strange, as I would expect there to be some sort of pre-release announcement if they are coming out in a matter of weeks. Is anyone aware of the actual street date? I'm kind of looking forward to both of these. Up over and out. Edited June 1, 2005 by Dave James Quote
Ed S Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 The new catalog featuring the Slack and Richards Selects arrived today. There must be some last minute snag. I'm pre-ordering both, FWIW. Both these guys will be new to me as well. Quote
Ron S Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 (edited) They're both up on the site now with 3 samples each, available for preorder. Johnny Richards Select Freddie Slack Select Edited June 2, 2005 by Ron S Quote
jazzbo Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 I preordered the Freddie Slack. Had to make PD's prophecy come to fulfillment! Quote
Ron S Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 I preordered the Freddie Slack. Had to make PD's prophecy come to fulfillment! ← Based on the samples, the Slack's the one for me. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 I preordered the Freddie Slack. Had to make PD's prophecy come to fulfillment! ← Based on the samples, the Slack's the one for me. ← Yeah, I have the stuff with Ella Mae Morse already, so I think the rest will be wonderful too. Quote
brownie Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 I'll need a lot of persuasion to purchase that Freddie Slack! Quote

brownie Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 I'll need a lot of persuasion to purchase that Freddie Slack! ← Why? (or are you being facetious? ) ← I'm rather serious! I have a lot of items on my TO BUY radar! Too many, in fact I'll probably be passing the Slack Select! Unless some of the people here whose opinion I trust prove me I'm in error Quote

Unless some of the people here whose opinion I trust prove me I'm in error ← I wouldn't at all say it is an essential purchase. I'm getting it because I have (and ENJOY) the material with Ella Mae and want the rest that surrounds it. I like it, it's boogie woogie Western style swing stuff and I find I like to listen to a little bit of that from time to time. The transfer and mastering should be top notch, and the booklet will fill me in on Slack, I don't know THAT much about him. And I finally got a bit of an increase at work (after four years of NOTHING I got a 2000 dollar one time bonus) and so I wanted to celebrate with something! Edited June 2, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
mgraham333 Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 I pre-ordered both today. The Select concept is perfect for me. I'm getting exposure to some artists that I wouldn't have otherwise - with the Mosaic treatment without the full-set price. I've ordered them all so far and unless/until there is just an absolute stinker, plan to continue. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 3, 2005 Report Posted June 3, 2005 I'm getting them both... but I'm no model of discretion. I've snapped up every single Select so far. The Richards samples sound great! Going to listen to the Slack ones later on. Quote
Kalo Posted June 6, 2005 Report Posted June 6, 2005 I have a lot of other things to buy first, but the Slack I have, with Ella Mae Morse, is quite enjoyable. When I first heard that stuff it was a kick to realize that white R&B goes back a long time before Rock and Roll -- Slack and Morse were doing something roughly equivalent to what Louis Jordan was doing at the same time. Love that "Cow Cow Boogie." At one point I was considering putting together an acoustic string band that played tunes like "Cow Cow Boogie," "I'm an Old Cowhand," Herb Jeffries's Bronze Buckaroo songs, and Jimmy Rowles's "Ballad of Thelonious Monk." Not really Western Swing, but more your basic Harlem Cowboy repertoire. Who knows, I may still do it. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 Pre-ordered both. I eat these damn things like popcorn! Quote
ralphie_boy Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 I pre-ordered the Slack based on the sound-clips. I'm looking forward to hearing the complete set. Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 I'll skip both and wait for the Piano set (Clare Fischer, Rowles, etc) that they said (today) is still on track for Oct. Quote
J.A.W. Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 I'll skip both and wait for the Piano set (Clare Fischer, Rowles, etc) that they said (today) is still on track for Oct. ← Same here. Quote
Ed S Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Pre ordered both. I REALLY liked the the cuts from the Richards. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 It's always nice when the sound issue can be removed from the purchasing equation. Both sets: Mastered in 24-bit by Malcolm Addey Quote
jazzbo Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 Just got a shipping notice on my Freddie Slack! Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 You're kidding! I'll try to place my order after I'm done taping... Quote
