Hardbopjazz Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 Has anyone ever bought anything from this label? I just got a Monk CD from a 1963 Japan performance. I have never heard of this label before. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 I only know of a Four Star label from California in the 1940's ..... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 Not sure what was the deal with this label in the nineties; they put out this Monk of TV performances in Japan, AND Blakey TV performances in Japan, a Derek Smith Trio lp, a Teddy Wilson that I think was a transcription date, and some other items that I never did pick up that seemed to fall in those three camps of recordings. Probably a bootleg label in general. Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 There was a fine Joseph Jarman album with Geri Allen on Four Star that was originally on a Japanese label. Don't know how "legit" the Four Star release was. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 (edited) AFAIK all their issues were licensed from Japan. They issued a Joseph Jarman date with Geri Allen as well. Too slow on the draw again. Edited May 31, 2005 by Chuck Nessa Quote
md655321 Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 Im pretty sure I own that Monk cd. Good music, with Charlie Rouse on "tumpet" according to the liner notes. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 31, 2005 Author Report Posted May 31, 2005 (edited) It does list Charlie Rouse on Trumpet. The sound is great for the Monk date. Not much as far as packaging. Just a sleeve with a photo of Monk and The track listing on the back. I got it used a record store for .99 cents. Cpuldn't go wrong. Edited May 31, 2005 by Hardbopjazz Quote
BbM7 Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 Don't know their provenance, but the discounters and $1.99 bins seem to have lots of these. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 I have two CDs on the Four Star label. Tommy Flanagan - Master Trio w. Ron Carter and Tony Williams - recorded June 16 & 17, 1983. Dick Hyman - A Waltz Dressed In Blue w. Michael Moore and Ron Traxier Peter Friedman Quote
SEK Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 Joseph Jarman's "Inheritance" on Four Star is a favorite (but/and I'm likely to feel that way about most of Jarman's works). Quote
Spontooneous Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 I've got these, and I like them all: Art Blakey, A Day With Art Blakey, Vol. 1, FS-40042 Art Blakey, A Day With Art Blakey, Vol. 2, FS-40043 Joseph Jarman, Inheritance, FS-40060 Sonny Rollins, Without A Song, FS-40088 Tommy Flanagan, Master Trio, FS-40057 Quote
king ubu Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I got that Jarman disc... found it at a cheapo uses shop several years ago. It looks somewhat weird, as if the cover was done at home on an old b/w xerox. Got to dig it up and listen after these endorseemnts here! Quote
