B. Goren. Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 I cant consider myself as an expert, but as far as I'm familiar with Duke Ellington's live recordings, this is probably one of the best. Brownie, do you have anything to tell us about February 1963 in Paris??? Quote
jazzbo Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 It's a damned good one in my opinion. Hard to say in a career that spanned more than fifty years what is "one of his best." There were so many masterworks within different periods. This was a great show though, and glad it was captured for us all to enjoy! Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 I ain't Brownie, but that is my favorite "live" Duke - particularly Rockin in Rhythm and Suite Thursday - Quote
brownie Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 Bentsy, I'm inclined to go with jazzbo on this! One of the best! And a favorite (like Allen states)! There are some of the best Hodges features ever in that 2CD release. And the band was on one of its ON evenings. I was at one of the four 1963 Paris Olympia concerts (can't remember which one, there were two concerts an evening on two successive days). It was the second time I attended a concert by the band. I was lucky to hear Duke Ellington several times afterwards but that 1963 Orchestra was the tightest of the lotl! Quote
JSngry Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 Definitely one of my favorites as well. The band was on! Quote
Kalo Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 (edited) I've been listening to this a lot of late, inspired by the discussion of Ellington's Suites on a previous thread. Amazing record. Definitely a favorite. A while back another thread asked for a favorite Ellington album cover. Though I didn't post at that time, this was the cover that came to mind. That's an amazing photograph of Duke's face. He looks so wise and clearsighted. His expression has the most delicate equilibrium between sadness and humor. The face of a man who saw and felt it all and in his music was able to capture and express all that he saw and felt. Edited May 26, 2005 by Kalo Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 one of the reasons I prize that record so much is the long solo by Ray Nance on Suite Thursday - Nance is my absolutely favorite jazz violinist - I love his sound - Quote
RDK Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 I've got so much live Ellington, but I don't think I have that one (maybe on LP, with a different cover). I think I'd better track that one down. Seriously, though - and I've asked this question before, of different artists - is there that much "bad" Ellington out there? I can't think of any. (Poorly chosen comps, yes, and some bad-sounding recordings, maybe.) I'm curious: what Duke albums, if any, should one avoid? Quote

RDK Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 I concur. That, given a nearly 50 year career, is impressive. Quote
Free For All Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 Duke Ellington is like sex and barbeque- even when it's bad it's good. Quote

jazzbo Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 But Ron. . .there's no guitar player on this one! Quote

I just ordered it. ← Unfortunately the current Collectables issue omits 10 bonus tracks used for the Atlantic cd set. The Atlantic set combined 3 lps and the Collectables only has the 2 Atlantic lps. The 3rd lp was a Reprise record called Greatest Hits Live. This included a wonderful version of the Black and Tan/Mooche/Creole Love Call medley. As the linernotes mention, Don't Get Around Much Anymore is a studio recording. To my knowledge, nobody has pointed out Satin Doll is a studio recording as well - it is the same as the recording on Ellington '66. Quote

Fortunately, I was able to figure that out (although I almost didn't) and order the original Atlantic set from Caiman through Amazon. Several Amazon Marketplace merchants still have brand new, unopened copies of the Atlantic set. Quote

To further drop M&Ms on the discographical trail, 8 of those 10 Reprise cuts were issued as a budget LP on the Columbia subsidiary Harmony as DUKE ELLINGTON'S GREATEST HITS Recorded Live In Concert (H 30566). BEsides the medley that Chuck rightly praises, there's an "Echoes Of Harlem" that is brief but stunning. Hell, the whole album is stunning. For that matter, the whole concert is stunning. I got the Harmony album for Christmas in 1970, bought the Atlantic album when it was first released (I was young and dumb, but not that dumb), still play the shit out of both, and still haven't missed the two cuts. such is the power of Ellington! AllenLowe Posted May 30, 2005 Report Posted May 30, 2005 (edited) well, that film the Green Berets was pretty terrible - wait, no that's the other Duke - Edited May 30, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
