GA Russell
BMG is offering this one. Their website quotes Scott Yanow's AMG review. I think you'll agree that this is a pretty obscure album for BMG to offer, as they usually pick albums that are best sellers. Has anyone heard it from start to finish? What's your opinion? Son-of-a-Weizen
Has anyone heard it from start to finish? What's your opinion? Yes, dozens of times......'Hobo Joe' is the nads!
Chuck Nessa
It's probably the best Duke Pearson record ever issued.
Spontooneous
It isn't the stereotypical BN date, because that's not the kind of player Johnny Coles was. If you've gotta have that slash-and-burn bravura, you won't find it here. But he has his own poetic intensity. I love his playing. Better start looking now for Coles' "The Warm Sound" on Epic, reissued on CD by Koch, and his "New Morning" on Criss Cross. Cali
Buy it. I've loved it for years. I'd compare it to Pearson's SWEET HONEY BEE but with more bite.

kinuta
I've got three Johnny Coles, the BN, 'Warm Sounds' on Koch and the Criss Cross ' New Morning'. They are all very good and it's hard to pick a favourite, you'll have to get them all.
sal
How strange...I was planning on starting a thread about this one sometime this week. Its a gem of an album. I'd never heard it, nor heard of it, and was completely taken back. MUCH more than a typical BN hard bop date, it really stands out. Grab it. jazzbo
It's probably the best Duke Pearson record ever issued. ← Possibly right on the money too, depending on personal tastes!
Morganized
It is a great session. There is a haunting beautiful ballad whose title escapes me right now that is one of the all time best IMHO. This is a solid cd. I have not heard the RVG yet but the Conn is great. Buy it!!
sidewinder
Can't go wrong with this one. Fine performance by Johnny Coles but very much a Duke Pearson session. 'Hobo Joe' is one of the all-time classic BN tracks. Love the cover art on this one too.
Noj
I'll agree with everyone here, this is a good one. "Hobo Joe" and "My Sweet Passion" are my favorites.
