Hardbopjazz Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Walking in Manhattan yesterday I passed the building that use to be the Village Gate. Well today the Village Gate today is a Duane Reed drug store. How about all the other famous jazz clubs throughout the world, which are now defunct, any idea what they've become? Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Geez, the last time I was at "the Gate" was in the early '80s to hear Alan Toussaint with guests Dr John and Fathead. Quote
Free For All Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 (edited) Chuck (or anyone), where in Chicago was the Plugged Nickel? How about Mister Kelly's? The London House? Edited May 22, 2005 by Free For All Quote
BFrank Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 The downstairs part of the Village Gate is still a club. I saw Mort Sahl there last year. The Keystone Korner is a now Chinese grocery store, I believe. Quote
Stereojack Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Lennie's on the Turnpike, Peabody, MA, is now an Italian restaurant. Quote

How about Mister Kelly's? ← Kelly's predated my arrival in Chicago. The London House was at Michigan and Wacker - last I knew it was a Burger King but that may have changed. Last act I saw there was Getz. The Nickel was on Wells St, across from the Dr Scholl's factory. IIRC it became a dog grooming place. Last music I heard there (fall of '68) was Miles with Wayne, Chick, Holland and Tony. Other folks I heard there included Coltrane (3? times), Wes, Jimmy Smith, Horace and Monk. Maybe more will come to me later. I'm sure Larry Kart can correct some of my info and give the word on Kelly's. Edited May 22, 2005 by Chuck Nessa Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Route 22 in Union, NJ is home to "The Flagship" - a onetime dance hall from the big band era, when it was known as "Flagship 29" - Route 29 was the earlier name of Route 22 before all the roads got renumbered in 1953. This is a huge building in the shape of a boat. It has gone through so many incarnations - a little history is here: http://www.agilitynut.com/eateries/14.html Jean Shepherd did a show in the 1960s that referenced The Flagship. http://www.flicklives.com/database/summary.asp?ID=19650819W It's currently a P.C. Richard electronics store. Ignominious. Mike Quote

I think I remember hearing that Mr. Kelly's was in the vicinity of Rush street. Wow, that Miles gig would have been fun to see and hear...as well as the others. Was the PN a decent club? Big/small? Nice/hole? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Seems there were at least 2 incarnations of Mr. Kelly's. The first club (on Rush Street) burned out on February 8, 1966 (called the "worst fire in 25 years"). The second was going in fall 1968 and I still see it listed in 1975. Not sure of that location right now. Mike Quote

brownie Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 The Blue Note club in Paris still exists on the Rue d'Artois. No name there. The jazz club turned into a very private sex club a couple of decades ago and ran into trouble with the Law. The Club Saint-German at Saint-Germain des Pres is still there but there is very little jazz of interest being played now. The Chat Qui Peche on the Rue de la Huchette is a Greek restaurant nowadays It's been that way since the club manager (the amazing Madame Richard) passed away too many years ago! Quote
BFrank Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Not exactly a jazz club, but: Winterland - now an apartment complex with a restaurant named ... "Winterland". Quote
