White Lightning Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 I've been enjoying this album a lot lately. I REALLY like this album. Oliver Nelson proves once again his genius arranging and composing. He also proves that it is possible to combine Jazz with electronics, rock and funk into a cohesive work. I know that this album is not a consensus. AMG, for one gives it only 2 stars, but I believ this is another gem off of Nelson's production line of great music. Is there any love here for Skull session? BTW, this album would make a great AOTW... Quote
sidewinder Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 I'm interested in hearing a bit more about this one myself - have been put off in the past by the neutral-to-negative comment this one seems to attract. Quote
Noj Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 I'll have to get this one out and give it another spin. The consensus in an earlier thread was that the album starts strong then tails off. I remember liking the whole thing, but I have a pretty high level of "cheese tolerance"... Quote

JSngry Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 I remember it as being a mixed bag, but the good part of the mix was quite good indeed. Never bought it, though, whereas I did buy plenty of other Nelson Flying Dutchman albums. But that was then and this is now, and that now is already then, so who knows? Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 We'll probably be seeing it from Water soon, since they seem to be one step ahead of my tastes these days. Quote
kinuta Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 I'm a big fan of Oliver Nelson and have had 'Skull Sessions' for a couple of years. I don't like it at all. Get ' Sound Pieces' instead. B-) Quote
brownie Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Kinuta is awfully right! So much better stuff from Oliver Nelson elsewhere... Quote
