JohnS
My thanks too, the Jazz Crusaders definitely, maybe the Cannonball but I probably have enough.
Guy Berger
Anybody have any comments on the Cannonball? How does it compare to the Jazz Workshop Revisited date? Guy
jazzbo
In my opinion all the Cannball Riverside/Landmarks are great. This one. . .well it's a different feel than Jazz Workshop Revisited, but great playing from all concerned.
JSngry
Anybody know if the bonus cuts on the Jones/Lewis were on the Mosaic? I know it says "previously unreleased", but...

Guy ← Well, it shouldn't be "serious work." Cannon's music always had an element of fun and excitement within and it will turn out to be FUN to get caught up! Son-of-a-Weizen
Those Johnny Smith Roosts have any 'zip' to 'em.........or is it central?
Nate Dorward
The June Christy is one of her best albums--an astonishing "My Ship" among other things. I have it on a twofer with The Intimate Miss Christy.
jazzbo
If you like those snoozy Venuses you should like those Smiths. -_-
Son-of-a-Weizen
You haven't listened to -_-
jazzbo
No, but there are plenty of Venuses I find snoozey. I don't pursue them any longer; not worth the money to me outside of the Wilens and Shepps I have already.
Son-of-a-Weizen
True, a good number of 'em are of the 'low key' variety but the overall excellent sonic quality gives them that extra shot of 'juice'. Snoozy and juiced up I like......snoozy and thin sounding (as I imagine those Roosts are) might not be as appealing to moi. Then again, I don't suppose anything can come out of the RVG workshop sounding too thin these days, eh?
jazzbo
Well to be honest, the Venuses don't seem that great sounding to ME. Part of the snooziness is the rather placid sound. And the Smith Roosts probably won't sound thin; the Addey remastered Mosaic sounds EXCELENT, and I imagine the cd will be from these remasterings. But that's just me, to each their own and then some (no wait, it's Democrats that believe in individualism,* I keep forgetting!) B-) *According to Dean on Meet the Press yesterday. Son-of-a-Weizen
Well to be honest, the Venuses don't seem that great sounding to ME. Careful. Don't let Dr. Jeff hear you say that or he'll likely pull you into the studio and put the hurt on you & make you listen to Roland Hanna's gorgeous 'Dream' over and over and over again 'till he breaks you! http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...=0entry361633
jazzbo
I'm not easily broken. I could probably hear that a number of times and not shift my opinion. I'm resolute.
Son-of-a-Weizen
I'm not easily broken. That's debatable. Once Dr. Jeff enlists the aid of Bright Moments, who'll be charged with blitzing you non-stop with 40's vintage jazz doll pics while you listen, you'll soon be reduced to putty! See..........you're already beginning to crumble!!!!!!!
jazzbo
Nope. 40's glamor dolls do nothing for me. Berigan is the one who gets all excited over those. I just don't dig the sound of those Venuses as much as I dig the sound of other labels. And I haven't been wowed by too many of the performances. You might like the Johnny Smith however. mikeweil
Back to topic ... could the Jones/Lewis be an indication we might get all the stuff from the Mosaic, one by one? Will get the Jazz Crusaders too ...
Big Al
Could someone explain the connection between Johnny Smith and Venus?
JSngry
Johnny Smith tried to do a rip-off of Sun Ra, but it never took, for obvious reasons.
Jazz Kat
Well it's good they're getting into some obscure ones. I wouldn't call them that, but I haven't heard of many mentioned..
