Guest Chaney Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 Synopsis: After breaking into a primate research facility, a group of animal rights activists discover caged chimps chained up before banks of screens displaying horrifying, violent images. Ignoring the warnings of the terrified researcher who maintains that the chimps are infected, they begin to free the animals and are immediately subjected to a bloody attack from the enraged creatures. Twenty-eight days later, Cycle courier Jim awakes from a coma in the deserted intensive care unit of a London hospital. He wanders out into a church where he finds dead bodies piled in heaps on the chapel floor. A sudden explosion from a makeshift bomb heralds the arrival of fellow "survivors" Selina and Mark. They take Jim to safety and explain to him that this infection is transmitted by blood and overwhelms the infected victim with a murderous rage within seconds. Britain has been overrun, and they have no way of knowing if it has spread worldwide. Their only hope of survival may lie in the hands of a Manchester group of soldiers, as they claim to have the "answer" to infection and invite any survivors to join them at their blockade. Faced with no practical alternative, the group sets out northwards, unaware that the worst is yet to come. Director: Danny Boyle Producer: Andrew MacDonald Screenwriter: Alex Garland Starring: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson, Megan Burns I tend to be a sucker for this type of filmed madness. Anyone planning to see this one? As this film was released in the UK last year, anyone already seen it and care to comment? Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 I'll see how the reviews treat it, but I hope its not as cheesy as this similarly themed Chuck Heston flick: Quote
Gary Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 Chaney if you like the genre you may like it . Genrally speaking its an OK film - nothing more , I was a bit dissappointed as i normally like Danny Boyle films . If you saw & enjoyed Dog Sodiers you'll like it (it has less humour though) . The plot does make you raise an eyebrow in places towards the end . I dont think all thats much help but i saw it a few months ago. Quote

It's shot in digital which takes a bit of adjusting. The SARS outbreaks give the film a whole extra flavour, which I obviously did'nt have when I saw it here last autumn. The cast is good, Cillian Murphy shows promise, Chris Eccleston is brilliant as always. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 My wife (who loves horror/zombie films) and I went to see this last week and we both enjoyed it. Interestingly, today's New York Times reports that a new version will be playing in theaters shortly with an alternate ending, more downbeat than the original film. A reflection of the importance of DVDs, I guess (the DVD is already out in Britain and it has more than this alternate ending). Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 A friend and I saw this movie about a week ago, and we both thought it was quite good. Neither on of us usually ever go to 'horror' films, but I had heard several reviews, including thoughtful ones on NPR and CBS Sunday Morning(!) - of all places. I didn't take my wife, as she never goes to horror films, and normally has zero interest in them. (Well, that probably describes me too.) How can I put this. She avoids them like the plague. (pun intended!! ) On a side note, I thought the soundtrack music was quite good, and fit with the film very well. I'm not sure I'm gonna run out and buy the soundtrack, mind you, but I though the music worked well. Quote
skeith Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 I saw this one a couple of weeks ago and liked it very much, sort of a thinking man's apocalyptic zombie movie. Warning to inhabitants of New York and Washington, DC: the possibilities this movie presents may be too disturbing for some viewers. Quote
