Guy Berger Posted June 5, 2005 Report Posted June 5, 2005 So what teams were better, Guy? The Spurs? They choked against a hobbled Laker team and the miracle Derek Fisher pulled out of a perfect pass from the Glove. The Kings? They've always got their "regular season champion" hats. The TWolves? They were playing over their heads as evidenced by their horrendous play this year with virtually the same squad... I knew as soon as Rasheed Wallace joined the Pistons that they were tops in the East, so all East teams are out. The Wallace/Wallace combo is the real deal. ← At the very least, the Spurs, Wolves and Lakers (possibly the Kings too) were better than the Pistons last year. Sometimes the best team in the NBA loses due to bad luck (the Spurs against the Lakers last year), and sometimes it's an attitude thing (why the Lakers lost in the finals). Guy Quote

ejp626 Posted June 5, 2005 Report Posted June 5, 2005 I am feeling more and more torn over this series. I should be pulling for the Pistons, but I just can't stand Sheed and his antics. I didn't like it when he was in Portland, and I thought he had calmed down and matured a bit last year, but clearly I was wrong. I so dislike these spoiled bballers who throw tantrums. Maybe it gets to the heart of everything I dislike about sports in general and how ridiculously overblown and overprioritized it is in society, but at least play with dignity and not act like a child. Blah. I'm actually pretty glad I won't be able to watch game 7 and will just catch the score after it's over. Quote

connoisseur series500 Posted June 5, 2005 Report Posted June 5, 2005 Heat scored 66 points last night (going by memory.) Is this the team that will beat the Pistons in game 7? Advantage: Pistons. ← Of course, if the best player in this series isn't playing tomorrow then the Pistons will win game 7. Guy ← It's a team sport, Guy. One guy alone means nothing. That's what makes the Pistons so tough. And, by the way, Shaq is the best player on either team... Quote

Guy Berger Posted June 5, 2005 Report Posted June 5, 2005 (edited) Of course, if the best player in this series isn't playing tomorrow then the Pistons will win game 7.← It's a team sport, Guy. One guy alone means nothing. That's what makes the Pistons so tough. The Pistons are unusual in that they have a collectively strong starting 5, none of which are superstars or (with the possible exception of Big Ben) irreplaceable. On the other hand, without Wade the Heat offense completely breaks down since he's the only guy on the team who can routinely drive to the basket. I think the "no Wade in game 7, no Heat victory" is a safe, rational assessment. (I agree with you that those are the breaks, though.) And, by the way, Shaq is the best player on either team... ← When healthy and putting up his regular season numbers, you might be right. But I think at this juncture Wade is more important to the team than Shaq is. Guy Edited June 5, 2005 by Guy Berger Quote

Bad luck, of course, also includes injuries; and, unfortunately, that's just part of the game. The '04 Lakers were not a very deep team, and Karl Malone's injury suffered in the Conference Finals against the Spurs made him quite ineffective against the Pistons. Karl Malone's presence meant a lot to the Lakers, especially on the defensive end; and, yes, the Lakers seemed to implode after they lost him. It's a shame, because it would have been very interesting to watch a full-strength Lakers squad play an excellent Detroit team that was clicking on all cylinders. Quote
