B. Goren. Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) It was a great concert of the famous band in 1940. The set is new and sealed. 40$ and it's yours. Free shipping. I'm ready also to trade if you have any interesting offer. the same set on Amazon.com. Edited May 19, 2005 by B. Goren. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 This is fantastic music, and this is the best version of the material I've heard (sonicswise!) Recommended! Quote
brownie Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Is the Storyville release THAT much better than the JVC? Quote
jazzbo Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) It's BETTER. "That much" is hard to say because that's hard to qualify, it is to my ears better, less smoothed out, a hair more dynamic. Edited May 19, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
brownie Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 OK, Lon! Had seen the two discs from the Storyville box available here for €12 ($15) total. I have secured them. Will miss the box and the accompanying notes but since I already have the JVC, I'll take the music only! And this is treasure island material! Sorry Bentsy! Quote

jazzbo Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Be patient. . . . I spend months sometimes waiting to sell items and they sell over time. I'd certainly buy this if I hadn't bought it on the day of its release! A fantastic document! Quote

B. Goren. Posted May 21, 2005 Author Report Posted May 21, 2005 Thank you Flurin. If you like Duke Ellington, I'm sure you will enjoy it. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Brownie, I'm glad I didn't steer you wrong! I could no longer do a comparison, as I gave the JVC to my father in Ohio, but. . . I was pretty sure I would have kept the BEST sounding version. Quote
brownie Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 I'll keep my JVC and store it in my car's compacts box. Driving to the sound of the 1940 Ellington band is really a dream come true! I was intending to sell that JVC at an outrageous price to King Ubu (hell, he is Swiss!) but Bentsy beat me to it with his box Quote

So: no way, brownie! Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 29, 2005 Report Posted May 29, 2005 (edited) with all due respect to Storyville, which has done a nice thing by bringing this out...well, I just got it in the mail and, honestly, the original Stash CD I have is much better sounding - they have, it is true, done some nice de-crackling, but also some unfortunate de-hissing, which is destructive - listen to the bass solo on Sepia Panorma, about 25 seconds in on disc two and you will hear the problem - it's somewhat compressed, the bass presence is largely lost from the original unprocessed Jack Towers transfer. You have to get by some of the noise in the original to appreciate this - but the original has so much ORCHESTRA, so many sweet highs - man, I am disappointed - this one's going out for sale if anyone is interested - Edited May 29, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
