Jim Alfredson
So, with the new server running great (so far) but keeping in mind the downtime of the last week, when would you folks like me to attempt to upgrade the forum software from version 1.3 to version 2.0? I paid for 2.0 months ago (1.3 was free) and I'd love to use it. I did confirm that this server has XML support, which the last one did not (I found that out the hard way if you recall.) The upgrade should not take long... a few hours. Could I try Wednesday night?
wesbed
Start the update immediately. We can jump over to The Back Room as necessary. http://www.jimdye.com/forum/
Jim Alfredson
I gotta go to bed right now! I'll shoot for tomorrow at midnight, eastern standard time. If that's ok. I'll shut the board down. Should only take an hour or so.
wesbed
I'll shut the board down. Should only take an hour or so. Should only take an hour or so (but will probably take longer). It's computer software, you know. Get some sleep. And, best of luck with the upgrade.
Quincy
Sounds great and thanks for the warning. Like Jazzmoose said I can't wait to ignore myself!
brownie
Since it's going to be Thursday morning on this side of the Ocean, we will just be patient. And yes, go get some sleep! Pleasant dreams!
wesbed
Got update?
Jim Alfredson
Well, the instructions recommend backing up the database before running the upgrader. Of course, that means waiting a LONG time, since our database is so huge and we've already added 2,000+ posts since I backed up the database and moved it over to this new server. So... I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to just append my previous back-up with the new data. Probably not....
Jim Dye
2.0.4, BABY!!!! Damn, it's late! I'm pulling an all-nighter for a training class. Edited May 19, 2005 by Jim Dye
Jim Alfredson
YESSIR!!! I am still figuring out the skins... although this color scheme ain't bad. I'd like to get back to the orange and purple, though. It's just so... normal now!
Jim Dye
Everything seems snappier, but there aren't many users on now. I like what I see! I guess the style sheets don't transfer, eh? Edited May 19, 2005 by Jim Dye
Jim Alfredson
Everything seems snappier, but there aren't many users on now. I like what I see! I guess the style sheets don't transfer, eh? ← Not very well, no. And it has an "Easy CSS editor" which gives you a kind of WYSIWYG editing mode, but I just read a big long thread on the IPB forums about how it's extremely buggy and can mess everything up big-time. So they suggest, until 2.1 comes out, to just code it straight-up. Blah.
Jim Dye
Well, thanks so much for all your hard work! Your dedication to our community is wonderful! I noticed something very cool. When someone is posting in a thread, their name is italicized!
Jim Dye
Also, I couldn't attach an image. But, as you can see, I was able to link to an image. I gotta get a few hours af sleep. G'nite!
Jim Alfredson
I'll give the ol' upload feature a test here:
Jim Alfredson
Seems to work. Man, this software is frickin' awesome.
JohnS
Looks fine to me (after the initial shock of the new).
Jim Alfredson
Yes, well... it kinda looks disjointed right now because I need to do some serious graphic work. But that is for another day. I can't belive it's already 4am!!!!
tonym
Whoaaahhhh!!!!! I like it. A change is as good as......etc.
Jim Alfredson
Thanks!!! I really should get to bed, so we'll have to deal with the crappy colors for a bit longer, but as you can see, I've started getting the old colors in. It'll be a trial and error process and I figure out what does what. But I am digging this software! Dudes, check out "My Controls". It gives you a list of your recently viewed topics, among other things. WAY COOL!
wesbed
The update. It worked.
Jim Alfredson
Notice it tells you whether a poster is on or offline underneath their avatar for each post!!!! COOL!!!
J.A.W.
This upgrade is definitely an improvement. Thanks for all the work you've done lately, Jim. By the way, I noticed that the "Donate" button is missing. Can you fix that?
mikeweil
I'll give the ol' upload feature a test here: ← Does that mean there are no more bulky oversized pics in the threads? Great! - Some features to get used to, like the reply and quote buttons are at the bottom of the post now, and you have to deactivate quote before you post. Very nice features. Great job!
