John B Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) I spent about $300 there that week. I was there last May and barely restrained myself by only grabbing three discs or so. Lots of very, very tempting items in their racks. I really miss browsing in Newbury Comics, too. Edited May 19, 2005 by John B Quote
John B Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Whenever I see a trove like this I assume that someone died. I asked the owner if that was the case. "No," he said, "but he did move to Africa." .....instead of Vermont. man, I hate that expression. Whenever I post about musicians coming here to play there is always a reply saying they thought the musician had died. Quote
wolff Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Oh, I see. No, it's not for the burn from my LP that I use in the car. I do not decorate my burns and if I did I could use the LP jacket picture, etc.. Just curious how Water's quality translates to CD to see what all the raving is about. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 I think it's a matter of cduniverse not anticipating demand from organissimoites. FOOLS! They shall PAY dearly for their insolence!!!! Quote
davef Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Anyone who has a copy of the Water of this - how's the sound quality? I've got the TOJC but wouldn't mind an upgrade.. the title cut is my favorite Freddie Roach tune! Quote
bluesForBartok Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Got my copy yesterday and dumped it right on my iPod. I've not heard the TOJC to compare. I'm not an audiophile but so far it sounds very good. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 This one arrived from CDU yesterday. Just a burnt TOCJ here and no time to compare but the sound is great. No hissy remaster or bombastic compression volume hijinx. My first Water purchase BTW and these folks do it right. The sleeve notes are on heavy weight glossy coated stock - not the cheap stuff you can see the type from the other side thru - Blue Note Roques all the way like a Connoisseur Edition. Water should start re-issuing all of the Blue Note titles. A sight and sound blind test between this, a TOCJ, a flimsy RVG and even a Mosaic Select re-issue would unanimously go to Water. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 That's good to hear about the quality of the Water reissues. I've just ordered 'The Phantom' and 'Say It Loud' from The Bards and I'm expecting great things.. Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Yes, Water is kicking both BN and Mosaic (especially the Selects) in the quality department these days. They just seem to care more about each title they put out. And the titles hint at a connossieur's eclectic sensibilities. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Sidewinder, you're really going to enjoy those two titles. The Water version of the Pearson pust the Mosaic Select to shame. Time for me to order the Roach. -_- Quote
sidewinder Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Splendido ! Really looking forward to hearing these two. I would have bought the 'Brown Sugar' too but I've got a good vinyl copy. The Bards have also thrown in the John Patton 'Minor Swing' too so it promises to be a great little consignment. After my £5 Conn 'haul' yesterday I'm on a roll with the BN CDs ! Quote
sidewinder Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 Just listening to my batch from 'The Bards' which arrived across the oggin today right on cue. These Water reissues are astonishing - the re-mastering and presentation of 'The Phantom' is very fine, up to Japanese standards IMO. The packaging, liner notes and art work are just great, obvious labour of love. Huge for Water - I hope they keep this up. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 These Water reissues are astonishing - the re-mastering and presentation of 'The Phantom' is very fine, up to Japanese standards IMO. Are these actually remastered? I see nothing on the label to suggest such on my copy of "The Phantom." My assumption is that they used the old TOCJ mastering. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 They are NOT the TOCJ remastering; they are remastered by Gary Hobosh (from memory, not sure how his name is spelled). Excellent remastering indeed. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 Indeed a truly excellent re-mastering. Releases such as this increase my faith in the CD medium. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 is this cd somewhat rare? i don't understand why bn isn't carrying this title???? Quote
Big Wheel Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Probably because they know most leader dates from Freddie Roach don't sell, and they don't feel like spending the dough on big labels that say "featuring JOE HENDERSON". Quote
jazzbo Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Well, I think that the fact that Blue Note is willing to licence problem (their assessment probably) titles to Water is a great thing. Water is in fact doing a better job than the Connoisseur series in my opinion in presenting these reissues (they sound better, they have beautiful booklets). I love the RVG series, but these sort of titles will likely never be considered for that series. I'm happy to get them from Water; keep 'em coming! Quote
jazzydaddy Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 I agree. I recently picked up a copy of the Water reissue of Leo Wright's "Soul Talk"album (originally on Vortex). The sound is great and the booklet is thorough and well done. It includes original liner notes & album cover, etc. Not the best album in the world but there is relatively little of Leo Wright's work in print so it is nice to have. A pretty low key sax & organ affair. I prefer Leo's earlier more exuberant side. jazzbo Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Yes, I hope they keep mining the Vortex vein as this and the Byard Lancaster are great to have on cd, and they're practically the best they can be from Water. Quote
bertrand Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Clifford Jordan's Soul Fountain on Vortex (w/ John Patton) would be nice! Bertrand. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted July 8, 2005 Report Posted July 8, 2005 is the cover on brown sugar reissue the original color? thxs Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted July 8, 2005 Report Posted July 8, 2005 what'zz de word on this? ss1 ← Great version of "Tenderly!" Worth getting , imo. But then I'm a big greazzzy eater! Quote
