RDK Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 What kind of "respect" are we looking for here? up A credited guest solo on a Doors, Stones, or Steely Dan album? Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 19, 2005 Author Report Posted May 19, 2005 Lou actually may be playing as much as he would like at this point. I guess I would love to see some press acknowledging Lou as the real Godfather of jazz organ. Jimmy may have invented it, but Lou propogated it. Almost every jazz organist of note went through Lou's bands. He could really shed some light on all this with a proper article or two. Quote
sheldonm Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Person's been on (whatever label Bob Porter's running) for over 30 years now. He's done a half a dozen things in the past few years on HighNote. Quote

Exactly. And Muse before that, and Westbound before that, and Prestige before that. Am I leaving anything out? Quote
montg Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Just from an historical perspective--his role on the early Blue Note recordings of Monk and of the Mesengers, as well as his role in soul jazz--he deserves love and tributes from festivals, Lincoln Center etc. Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 maybe true, but for recording an album like Hot Dog he also deserve solitary confinement - Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) Lou contributed to the Birdland albums with Art Blakey, some of the most important hard bop records ever made. He deserves the respect for that in a major way, those albums I think were a bridge between bop and hard bop. Edited May 20, 2005 by CJ Shearn Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 20, 2005 Author Report Posted May 20, 2005 maybe true, but for recording an album like Hot Dog he also deserve solitary confinement - ← Actually, the tune Hot Dog itself is one of his best compositions. He redid it on "Caracas" in the 90's and he and Lonnie really play some mind-blowing stuff over it. Hot Dog is one of the greatest alltime soul jazz records!!!! Put me in solitary confinement with it and and turntable and I'm cool. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 Hot Dog is one of the greatest alltime soul jazz records!!!! Put me in solitary confinement with it and and turntable and I'm cool. ← Aww yeah! It might be dual confinement! Sorry, Allen! Quote
