MartyJazz Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 This duo will be appearing at the auditorium of the Broward Museum of Modern Art this coming Saturday, a concert sponsored by South Florida Jazz. If you're a member of SFJ, tickets are $25 apiece, otherwise $30. Best to phone toll free than to order online (much cheaper handling charge and it's one charge per phone call no matter how many tix are being ordered) at 877-877-7677. Quote
MartyJazz Posted May 23, 2005 Author Report Posted May 23, 2005 This was truly a fabulous and quite memorable concert. Although we all know that Burton has been around a long time, perhaps some here don't realize (for some reason, I had not) what a veritable master at the vibes he has become. His facility and musicianship was breathtaking at times and the audience was very appreciative. His program was an amalgam of wonderful music from all the artificial categories that are imposed on music, making one realize the veracity of Duke's comment, "There are only two kinds of music, good and bad". He played jazz standards from the swing and bop eras ("Opus 1/2", "Bags' Groove"), Latin pieces ("Afro Blue"), American pop standards ("My Romance", "My Funny Valentine"), tangos (Piazzola, etc.), classical pieces (Scarlatti, Ravel) and relatively recent originals (Chick Corea). All of it cooking, in conjunction with a marvelous pianist with whom he has collaborated for some years obviously, Makoto Ozone. A great evening of music. If this duo should come your way, I can't recommend the experience highly enough. Quote
dsgtrane Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Everything Marty said and more. Was not acquainted with Ozone and had taken Burton for granted prior to this. Won't make that mistake again. In fact, just ordered their album "Virtuosi" which they played a few tracks from. As Burton has recently become a South Florida resident, I'm hoping to see him perform again soon. Quote
