Hardbopjazz Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 (edited) Does anyone know if he plays flute? I have a recording of the Heath Brothers from an old radio broadcast. On one tune, Lover Man, there's no sax, but flute. There no mention of any other musician on that date when their names are announced. Edited May 15, 2005 by Hardbopjazz Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Yes he played flute frequently in the '70s. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 15, 2005 Author Report Posted May 15, 2005 Thanks for that reply. He is very good on flute. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Be aware that Tootie Heath also played flute (wooden, I believe) with the Heath Brothers. Sometimes both he and Jimmy would play together. Mike Quote
marcello Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Maybe it was this live recording: 1979 Heath Brothers - Live at the Public Theater (Flute, Soprano, Tenor) Quote

EKE BBB Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Maybe it was this live recording: 1979 Heath Brothers - Live at the Public Theater (Flute, Soprano, Tenor) Geeeez... it took me a few seconds to discover that there was no relation between the live recording you mentioned (1979) and the photo you posted!!! I even thought there was TWO Tootie Heath, as the pictures of Tootie I have seen (from about 1980, mainly performing or recording with Tete Montoliu) showed a young, athletic and black-beared guy and now you brought that one... ...obviously from 25 years later (50th anniversary edition of the (JVC) Newport Jazz Festival -2004) Cheers, AgustÃn Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 There are a number of places to hear Tootie tootle the flute - all from the 1970s period. One of the tracks on "Marchin' On" by the Heath Brothers comes to mind where Jimmy and Albert both play flutes, then on Kenny Barron's Peruvian Blue, and he also played it when with Yusef Lateef. See my Kenny Barron discography (check personnel index to find dates with AH on flute). Mike Quote

Noj Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 Marchin' On is a personal favorite, I have the vinyl reissue. "Angel Man" is a nice funk jazz tune on which Jimmy Heath plays flute. I have it as part of a compilation. Quote
