marcello Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 This question was proposed by John LaBarbera in JazzWeeks jazzproglist newsletter. I thought it would be interesting for all of the Organ/Tenor fans here at Organissimo. I'll forward the answers to John after the Board has at it for a while. "In you're opinion, what tenor sax artists are still with us who have a foundation in the organ trio history? Thanks for your input. John" Quote
marcello Posted May 14, 2005 Author Report Posted May 14, 2005 This is harder than it seems, isn't it? Here is a interesting RECENT photo: Quote

marcello Posted May 14, 2005 Author Report Posted May 14, 2005 No, Jazz Kat. Here is a latter photo of Scott Jim - with your knowledge of the history, what about John's question as to tenor players that are still with us? Quote
marcello Posted May 15, 2005 Author Report Posted May 15, 2005 So far the two that have been stated, Person and Holloway, are the only two that I can think of. There must be more? Her is Red with Gene Ludwig: Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Nice picture of Gene Ludwig. I know I've mentioned this before...but Marchel Ivery cut two of the best tenor/organ records ever made...w/Joey Defrancesco. Both on Leaning House under Marchel's name. Also, some great Tenor men that are still active to varying degrees, but don't get a lot of recognition, but were definately down in the organ heyday. Dave Hubbard, Bill Saxton, Harold Alexander, Grant Reed, Ronnie Cuber, David Newman, George Braith, Joe Lovano (worked with Dr. Lonnie extensively)....there are many, many others I'm leaving out. And although he doesn't play tenor...the KING of all horn players associated with the hammond organ...Lou Donaldson, the godfather of organ jazz. Quote

marcello Posted May 15, 2005 Author Report Posted May 15, 2005 (edited) Thanks SS. I guess a lot of the veterans have pased on? When I was looking on the web for the tenor player that I saw with McDuff once ( I don't recall his name but the drummer was Joe Dukes!), I came across this site with 21 minutes of live McDuff on it:Live McDuff Edited May 15, 2005 by marcello Quote
cannonball-addict Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Johnny Griffin (sort of) Houston Person (definately) David "Fathead" Newman What about Frank Catalano (I know he's young but he kills on several Delmark releases)? Quote
marcello Posted May 15, 2005 Author Report Posted May 15, 2005 Don't know about him. Any History? Here's a photo: Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Bootsy Barnes? Is he still around? I love his playing on Don Patterson's "Why Not" on Muse. I was just listening to that the other day and Bootsie was killin'! Quote
marcello Posted May 23, 2005 Author Report Posted May 23, 2005 I just found this fairly recent photo of Bootsy Barnes for you: Quote
cannonball-addict Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Bootsy Barnes is one of a few Philly jazzmen who just won't quit it! Quote
