If you like Getz/Raney, you'll probably like this stuff. Gryce also plays baritone (no solos) on one of the Renaud/Cohn sessions from NYC 1954. Mike Quote

I mean, having all those JiP and Vogue discs he pops up everywhere, and I never really thought his playing was that great. There's nothing wrong with it, for sure, but sometimes I'd with for Solal or Urtreger or Peiffer instead... If you're interested in all star affairs, there's also that date on one of the first of the "Birdlanders" OJCs, feat. Renaud with Kai & Jay, Cohn, Bags, Percy Heath, a.o. Quote

Not that Renaud was a bad piano player. On a strictly musical aspect, he was overshadowed by some other French pianists. But he is the one who animated the post-bop Paris scene and his groups at the Tabou, Le Boeuf sur le Toit and Club Saint-Germain gathered the innovative musicians of the time. He was backing Clifford Brown on many of the Vogue sides recorded in 1953 and when Lester Young was looking for good musicians to back him at jam sessions when he was in Paris, it was the Henri Renaud group which was picked for the honor! Renaud later became a highly respected produced for CBS/Columbia France and helped bring still unmatched reissues of the Armstrong, Basie, Ellington (and others) Okeh/Columbia sessions. An aside: the Birdlanders OJC has some of the material that is included in the Vogue BMG Henri Renaud All Stars reissues. For once, forget about the OJC! The material is complete and in better sound on the Vogue CDs! Quote

I'm aware that these Birdlanders discs come from "Vogue in NYC" sessions, so to speak, but where are the tracks with Jay & Kai to be found? I only have vol. 1 (picked it up in a sale, never looked for vol. 2 so far). Also, can you list all the new Vogue Masters releases? I have no idea how to find out about *all* the new ones, and I'd love to know! Quote

This session also has Jimmy Gourley and Sadi on it (reissued by Fresh Sounds). Second the comment about Renaud's great influence at French CBS. Those Basie 10LP Columbia sets were his, I believe, along with that mega-cool 'Essential Miles Davis' compilation box. Quote

This session also has Jimmy Gourley and Sadi on it (reissued by Fresh Sounds). Blue Star 6831? That one is also on the Jazz in Paris disc "Zoot Sims et Henri Renaud". That is a very nice disc, with 4 lenghty Sims cuts (with Eardley, Renaud, de Hass [shouldn't that be de Haas?] and Saudrais) plus the Renaud 10 inch album. Quote

LP cover is a nice facsimile of the original and pressing quality is fine. The LP kicks off with 'Venez Donc Chez Moi', a tune which I've always enjoyed from those Clifford Brown Vogue sides. I've got other Fresh Sound LP reissues by Pierre Michelot, Bobby Jaspar and others and they sound great ! Quote

I don't know much about Freshsound vinyl, the only one I have is Sal Salvador's Bethlehem "Salute to the Greats" (sounds good to my ears, too). With CDs, they don't do such a great job, and I assume if one wants to get this Renaud date in as legit a way as possible, today the JiP disc should be the way to go. Of course in the eighties that disc wasn't around... B-) Quote

brownie Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Ultra rare 78s from Henri Renaud (1951 date with Bobby Jaspar, Sandy Mosse, Jimmy Gourley, etc...) were reissued a while back on a CD by Paris Jazz Corner. Pretty good but the sound is low fi.
