clifford_thornton
I don't know if I can name 'a' Monk LP... but at the end of the day, Trane or Rollins would probably be involved. Rouse is irritating, though I do like the production on those Columbia LPs. Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake - The Newest Sound Around Kevin Ayers - Shooting At the Moon Battered Ornaments - Mantlepiece Can - Monster Movie Brigitte Fontaine & Areski - Le Bonheur Don Ellis - New Ideas Max Roach - Speak, Brother, Speak! Stanley T - Blue Hour and Amen on LMO - amazing record!

neveronfriday
I have difficulties adding my picks here for two reasons: 01) My picks were already mentioned I don't know how many times. 02) I often have problems picking a whole album as the one and only pick for that artist. Case in point. Some of the best work Ella Fitzgerald ever did was recorded with Count Basie (Ella and Basie, Verve), such as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light". Several of the other tunes on that release don't do it for me though and I would probably go and look elsewhere for more. Or Paul Desmond? Or Getz? Or Teddy Wilson? Or the man himself, Basie? There isn't one album that I could pick. Call me indecisive. So, I would do it in the true European fashion, burn myself a CDR with out-of-copyright stuff of one artist and nominate that here. P.S.: Someone suggested a thread for songs that pulled one in, made one look for more songs by that artist. That I would have plenty to contribute to. P.S.S: Why does O. Peterson's Startford disk always show up in these lists? I know all the reviews etc., but it's one example for an artist where I would pick something else (and I'm nearing the 100 disk OP mark ... yeah, I know, shoot me). Yes, it swings, but the audio quality is horrible, and some of the London House cuts do much more for me, although we're talking a different OP trio and sound here. To contribute something, here's an ecclectic off-the-top-of-my-head-list: Shorty Rogers [short Stops] Clifford Brown [Clifford Brown and Max Roach] Bob Brookmeyer [Traditionalism Revisited] Lee Konitz [Motion] Ben Webster [ben Webster and Associates] Coleman Hawkins [Hawk Flies High] Jimmy Giuffre [1961] Benny Goodman [undercurrent Blues] Joe Williams [at Newport] Joe Mooney [Do You Long for Oolong] Ella Fitzgerald [Ella at Duke's Place] Benny Carter [Further Definitions] Ray Brown Trio [Live at Starbucks] Ralph Sutton [Wondrous Piano: The Private Family Recordings 1961] Peterson/Webster [ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson] Lester Young [Complete Aladdin Recordings] Flanagan,Tommy [Lady Be Good: For Ella] Fred Astaire [steppin' Out] Una Mae Carlisle [The complete Una Mae Carlisle, RCA] ... time to sleep ... more another day ...
