kh1958 Posted January 14, 2023 Author Report Posted January 14, 2023 World music focus at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 2023 The Cultural Exchange Pavilion spotlights Puerto Rico in 2023 Following the cancellation of its 2020 event, Jazz Fest renews its commitment to celebrate Puerto Rico in 2023 through colorful artist demonstrations, live music and dance showcases, parades, cultural displays, photo exhibits and authentic cuisine. Inspired by Alynda Segarra’s 2017 song “Pa’lante” – a fierce ode to her people’s resilience in the wake of hurricane Maria –- Jazz Fest’s celebration of Puerto Rico Pa’lante Puerto Rico! or Onward Puerto Rico! highlights the vibrant music and culture of the island, which remains strong despite the devastating effects of hurricanes, earthquakes, and the pandemic over the past few years. Puerto Rican bomba, plena, salsa and reggaeton rhythms will echo across the Festival grounds with daily parades and live performances on various stages, and inside the Cultural Exchange Pavilion. Reggaeton artist Farruko headlines the musical line-up with 12 bands ranging from Mayaguez’ traditional bomba ensemble La Raȉz to Loiza’s urban bomba sounds of Tribu de Abrante, and from the traditional jibaro repertoire of Conjunto Típico Samaritano to local techno drum band ÌFÉ. Strolling through the Fair Grounds over both weekends, colorful Vejigantes – Puerto Rico’s iconic masked folk characters – will lead daily parades with La Casa de La Plena Tito Matos. Another highlight of the presentation includes Hurray for the Riff Raff’s leader Alynda Segarra drawing from her Puerto Rican roots for a special show at the Cultural Exchange Pavilion. New this year, the Cultural Exchange Village comes to life outside the performance tent with artist demonstrations, daily parades and samplings of Puerto Rican dishes presented by FOWLMOUTH in collaboration with Carmo Restaurant. Vejigante mask maker Raul Ayala, bomba dress designer Milteri Concepción, and güiro maker Edwin Curbelo will be among a dozen artists and master craftsmen demonstrating their creative process in the Cultural Exchange Village. While spotlighting Puerto Rico, the Cultural Exchange Pavilion Stage continues to present its signature blend of local and international performers from around the world, with special appearances by Bassekou Kouyate of Mali, Mdou Moctar of Niger, and by Colombian artists Ceferina Banquez and Rey Vellanato & Beto Jamaica. kh1958 Posted February 11, 2023 Author Report Posted February 11, 2023 Lewisville Grand Calendar Texas Tunes: Jackie Venson Date: February 11, 2023 8:00 p.m. Location: Lewisville Grand Theater 100 N. Charles Lewisville, Texas 75057 Add to my Calendar Jackie Venson takes the Huffines Performance Hall stage at the Lewisville Grand Theater on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 11. Jackie Venson is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter known far and wide for her complexly beautiful music and blazing guitar skills. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Jackie has traveled the world playing to massive crowds both as a headliner and as support for major acts such as Gary Clark Jr, Melissa Etheridge, Aloe Blacc, Citizen Cope to name a few. With the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cancellation of her entire tour schedule and the wave of social change sweeping across the country in 2020, Jackie committed herself to releasing more music than ever before, connecting with her fans directly and speaking up about the change she wanted to see in her city and country. Since then, Jackie has released two studio albums, two live albums under her name and several electronic albums under her side project titled jackie the robot. During the pandemic, Jackie Venson also made her National TV Performance Debut on Austin City Limits 46th season, a huge honor for the native Austinite. With Venson’s most recent release, “Love Transcends,” she firmly established herself as a sonic force to be reckoned with out of Austin, Texas. Theater doors open: 7:30 p.m. Concert begins at 8 p.m. Quote

Trained as the pianist of his family’s rural Virginian church at 12, community service was ingrained from the beginning. A working musician and composer, Cooper-Moore developed a method for teaching academic curriculum to 3 to 5 year-olds through music. Publishing this method, he traveled the country training Head Start teachers. His has been core figure as a pianist in New York’s free-jazz scene (first in the early 70’s, then again since 1985). But his artistry has also included music for theater, dance, and film. Cooper-Moore’s current performances encompass wide-ranging explorations on hand-made instruments, insightful storytelling, and virtuosic piano playing. He is an artist whose music embodies the urgency of the moment, and whose voice delivers plainspoken truth with unwavering intensity. In 2006 and 2008, Cooper-Moore came to Houston to work with children in Nameless Sound’s workshops, training Nameless Sound’s staff in his methods. Raising the bar for our own mission, he left an immeasurable influence on our organization. Quote

kh1958 Posted March 7, 2023 Author Report Posted March 7, 2023 A LANDMARK FORT WORTH EVENT The Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival was created to highlight an often forgotten and neglected piece of history: the central role of blackness in American roots music. The festival aims to broaden the local arts scene and place Fort Worth on the map as a place to go for traditional music lovers, and a site where community members can engage in Black reclamation of this history. It is the only major city festival of its kind that is both Black-led and centered around Black artists. FWAAMFest is a program of the Fort Worth nonprofit Decolonizing the Music Room, whose mission is centering Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian voices and narratives in music education and related fields. FWAAMFest premiered online in 2021, and in person in 2022. We are excited to have you join us in 2023 for another year performances from award-winning artists from around the country representing the African American past, present, and future of old time, jug band, early blues, jazz, and beyond!
